yes, side to side is normal, it has to have some for oil clearance in the bushings. if it has none something is wrong. i have seen turbos you could visually see lots of side to side, it is ok. zero endplay, that is what grenades turbos. If they have endplay the wheels hit the housings and kablooey.

I was surprised when my new D66 had just as much if not more radial play than my high mile original. I guess it is normal, Beans said it was ok, and so far so good.
