So I am helping a friend out with some trouble he has been having with his truck. It is an 02 F350 7.4l. The truck started having trouble almost a year ago while hauling an empty 3 car trailer in texas. There was a serious coolant leak somewhere that was ending up in the oil. Obviously the first thought was that the head gaskets were damaged and they were replaced. This didn't help... less then 40 miles later the same issue, low coolant light and frothy dipstick. The next suspect in line was the heads. They were replaced with known good used units and reinstalled. Again... no change. Then the fuel injectors were pulled, inspected, preasure tested and reinstalled. The oil cooler was also pulled and inspected, but not preasure tested for unknown reasons (mechanic had nothing to say). Oh, and the front lower cover (not exactly sure what this is) was also replaced with a new unit. At this point the owner had already purchased another truck and became pretty fed up with this one and it has sat since. I am curious what might be causing this. The owner believes that the oil cooler could be the culprit, but after reading some online posts it seems there should also be oil in the coolant if this was the case. Anyway, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

More than likely it is the Core bundle inside the cooler housing. It probabley has a cracked tube in it.Ford cannot properly test this. The best bet is a reman exchange it is pre-assembled and has been properly tested

Someone on another thread a couple days ago with the same symptoms discovered a hole eroded thru the front cover into the oil area. He said it was a needle size hole behind the water pump at the 4 or 5 O'clock position.
I got coolant into the oil via a freeze plug that is under the valve cover that blew out.

He has posted photos of the cover now. Here is the thread.

If you do not have oil in your coolant bottle, Do not bother changing your oil cooler. You can get oil in the coolant when the engine is off. When it is running oil psi is higher than coolant psi. Oil will always be in the cooling system. It will fill the expansion bottle with the same frothy crud. Other than porous cylinder walls due to cavitation when the coolant additive is not used, That combined with what you have done already, leaves me sort of stumped. Are you sure it is coolant? Is the truck always low on coolant? Rain water will froth just the same. Unfortunately I believe it could be a cracked block. I just cant think of anywhere (other than the already replaced heads and gaskets) where coolant will enter the crankcase without contaminating the coolant. Let us know what you find,Dave
