As a newbie to Ford and Diesel's, I have a couple of questions. I bought a used 99 F250 Superduty with the 7.3 diesel( budget would not allow for new ). It is a great rig. The wife even loves it. Here are my questions. In the owners manual, it recomendeds draining the Xmission fluid and replacing. Is this really needed or is it a way to generate revenue for the dealer's. At work we have a vechile maint. dept. and the guys there say they have trucks ( with auto trannies ) that have over 250K and they just monitor the levels and cleanness of the fluid.

The second question, what would you recommend for the contents of spare parts kit, to carry for a diesel?

Get a Chiltons manual. It sucks, but is better than nothing.
1) CPS (buy at International dealer)
2) Glow plug relay.
3) Belt
4) Fuses
5) Small tool kit W/10mm wrench
6) Flashlight.
7) Rain gear(pants & jacket)
Thats a start....
My 2 cents..

You should flush the entire tranny every 30,000 miles, if doing a lot of towing I would go 25K. These tranny's are way to expensive to not change the fluid or filter in 250K. The head of your maintenance dept. should be fired!!!!he won't work on my truck I can tell you that. The CPS is a spare to carry along with the tools to change it which are a 10mm socket, 4" extension and ratchet and reg. screwdriver. When the CPS goes you are usually stuck right there!!! You can get them off ebay for under 60.00. A glow plug relay is also a good thing to have. otherwise same things you would carry in a gasser.

Yeah; like a cps is going to be nice enough to go out on a nice sunny day.....
Seriously, those yellow rain outfits are one of the best pieces of survival equipment available.
When you hear the stories of folks lost in the woods for days; they would be just fine with a full rain outfit.
I have slept like a baby, leaning against a tree in the pouring rain while dear hunting in the early morning.
So as far as stuff in the truck to deal with breakdown,,, I think this is the most important piece if you live in rain country.
Maybe in New Mexico it's different.

Salem Oregon.
We farmed onions for several years, hence the name.
Then we came to our senses and fired up a beekeeping business. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
