In February 2011 I purchased a re-maned Detroit 12V92 . To my understanding it was test on the dyno for 16 hrs prior to picking it up. I transported it without any problems mounted it to a Ingersoll RAND drilling rig. It is now April and it still wont start.

We have tried and double checked everything without any success. We have also invited several so-called diesel mechanics out to help trouble shoot. We all come to the same conclusion. IT SHOULD START.

  • WE HAVE FUEL, AIR AND OF COURSE COMBUSTION, BUT IT WONT FIRE
  • IT BLOWS BLACK SMOKE OUT THE STACKS
  • BTWN 60-80 LBS OF FUEL PRESSURE ONCE THE INJECTOR PUMP PICKS IT UP
  • WE HAVE BLED AND PRIMED SEVERAL TIMES EVEN THOUGH ONCE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH
  • WE HAVE A PUMP TO GET THE FUEL TO THE INJECTOR PUMP.
  • REPLACED STARTER WITH A GEAR-REDUCTION STARTER IN HOPES THAT WE POSSIBLY WEREN'T GETTING IT TO CRANK FAST ENOUGH
  • WE DIDN'T TRY A DRY RUN AND WENT AHEAD AND CONNECTED ALL ACCESSORIES, ( Ingersoll RAND SCREW/VEIN TYPE COMPRESSOR TO THE REAR AND THE HYDROLOIC PUMP FOR THE DRILLING UNIT ON THE FRONT. HOWEVER NETHER ARE UNDER LOAD.

Of course it is under warranty and we have contacted Diesel Exchange. Without any satisfaction. Since we were started into a hole when the old one gave out on us it is imperative we get this thing going. Our next step is to contact Stewart Stevenson $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ To assist.

Your help and suggestions or any input at all will be greatly appreciated.

Does it sound like it's trying to fire? The black smoke would indicate that the injectors are spraying some fuel. Have you pulled a valve cover to check the racks? Another thought, is the emergency air shutdown door tripped. Did they install some type of shipping plug in the air intakes?

CHECKED IT, THANKS
THAT WAS INCLUDED IN 1 OF OUR SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, THANK VM.

OKAY NEXT IS ONE, MY EMPLOYER AND I CAN NOT SEEM TO AGREE ON BUT OF COURSE HE IS ALWAYS RIGHT.

Fuel lines, the lines from the tank are say 1/2'', okay then, some how over time he has ran it through a filter and then spliced it into a 3/4'' diam line from filter to primary filter/inlet on engine, I say the 1/2'' can not feed the 3/4'' fast enough to keep pressure and volume leading to air in line and not enough fuel, He seems to think it don't make a bla bla bla since it worked fine on the DD or computerized. we now have a natural. does this make any dif or sense . I am fine being wrong.

thank you

PS
Stewartn Stevenson coming next week. maybe with help we can cancel them. please the $$$$$$$$ ! are starting to BITE

as long as the fuel lines are bigger than stock they won't cause a restriction. it will just hold more fuel in the line. so this time he is right :) when you are cranking it over can you hear good air movement through the intake. black smoke seems to indicate plenty of fuel, but not enough air. either that or it is under too much load to start(seen it on a cat powered atlas copco air compressor) any way that the unloader could be haywire on the compressor? if its not loaded the standard starter should have no problem whatsoever. just to be sure we are talking about the same thing here..... 2 stroke detroits had an airkill built into the blower assembly, you may also have an aftermarket airkill between the air filter and the engine they would both need to be in the run position

Are the blowers turning? The black smoke has me puzzled. Why do think the engine is turning the wrong direction? When did this engine last run? Are you sure the load isn't too much for starting? Did S&S come out?

All two stroke engine rotations are viewed from the front - engine arrangements are viewed from the flywheel , if it turns counter clockwise from the front it,s left hand rotation . If it,s spinning in the wrong direction when you try to start the engine it will draw air through the exhaust and exhaust out the blowers

another mechanic told me it would pump oil either way you turn it
No it won't without a change to the oil pump gears. The original poster has never said it's running backwards unless I missed something.

if the engines are bolted together back to back isnt one engine always turning backwards being that it is two 6v92 together and since the engine is made to turn either way depending on cam timing wont the oil pump pump either way ive never tried to turn one the wrong way but there is confusion with the owner as to rotation possibly asked for right hand rotation viewed from rear and sold right hand rotation viewed from front
