I was reading on the site about temps vs. fan engaging......unfortunately there is no set answer. I have owned my truck for over 4 years and have pulled a camper the entire time I have had the truck. I have NEVER heard the fan engage 1 time. I can see it spin when the truck is idling, but I have pulled my camper with my Dad's truck(06, 6L) and his fan would engage while pulling up longer hills. I have a programmer and last time I pulled the camper up some long grades the highest temps were: oil 224, Coolant 221, trans 179. I was pulling a good sized hill and it was 97* outside, but I would have thought the fan would engage. I haven't seen that code again and I only saw it once.A long time ago I had a code for the Fan Sensor, but that was 2.5 years ago. I dont puke coolant, new oil cooler, no egr/cooler( I still have the egr installed and hooked up), truck runs great, pulls great, no smoke.....I am hoping I am just worrying for nothing, but I find it odd that I have not one time EVER heard the fan engage. I have also checked the wiring to the fan clutch and all is intact after reading about 03's and fans chopping wires.

Both my 03's are identical when it comes to fan operation. The only time mine bark at me hard is when I have the plow on in the winter. It will darn near scare the life out of you for the few seconds and few times it does run. Pulling in the summer it never makes a peep, though it does run at a reduced speed. Go figure? b

Yeah , i think mine has come on twice and yes the plow was on the truck and the grill was 100% clogged w/snow. other than that , no fan roar ever.

I was thinking maybe it was something in the 03's computer flashing, but my friends 03 dually came on when pulling hills too. I dont know.....I dont have a lot of experience with other peoples 6L. The ones I do know all have the fans come on while pulling. Maybe I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth huh?

As 03 said, if your temps are looking good, don't worry about it.

And remember, it's a variable speed fan. I can't hear mine until it spools up to about 1700rpm's. After that is when the roar sets in.

Me too. Never heard it. The highest temps I've seen were 218 EOT, 212 ECT. That was pulling here in flat Florida.

Mine will come on at about 210* OT when pulling...On a hot (100*) day it will run for a few seconds after restarting from a 5-10 minute shutoff (refueling, grocery store,etc)...especially with the A/C on

Mine didn't work for the 1st few years I owned the truck. Then, one hot summer day while towing, I pulled off the freeway and noted the AC stopped working and temp jumped every time I slowed down. Took it immediately to a friends shop, and discovered that the wires to the fan clutch had been cut.
After that, the next time I towed on a hot day, the fan kicked on and scared the crap out of me.
So, you might wan't to check yours out further. It doesn't come on very often, but when it does, it is quite obvious.
Since it took a few years before it developed, I suppose it might not cycle as often when everything was new...but, kicks in more as the radiator, EGR cooler, and oil cooler begin to clog? ...or maybe it's due to global warming:icon_rolleyes:
