Are you shifting it right? When you are in 4wd high, stop and shift into neutral, keep your foot on the brakes and shift into 4wd low. Then put it back into drive and it should be in 4wd low. When you need to go back to 4wd high you just reverse the procedure. I'm not saying you don't know how to operate your truck, but a lot of us forget the right way to do it.

ESOF? OR the manual shift? If it is ESOF, you may have something wrong with the switch or motor inside the TC.
I see now it says, "Linkage seems to be moving fine" ,, so manual I assume,, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif Sorry , cant think of anything off the top of me head. if it LOOKS like it is moving the linkage, and not going into LOW.

I know MINE wouldn't come out of LOW the other day, I was 300 miles from home, It finally worked right, I think I was doing it wrong, thank GOD. Man that would be a LONG drive in 4L,,,, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif

Mine is auto ESOF and does the same thing.
It will go in 4wd high but not 4wd low....
And you say it's the switch in the trans case ??
Clean it replace it or what ??
Thanks......
PS...I have Warn hubs so it's not a vacunm leak since I do get out to lock the hubs..

Better get it checked out. My '99 transfer case failed on me and cost me a $500.00 tow bill from the top of Mt. Rainer, WA. The Hi/Low shift fork wears out due to lack of lubrication and then you are stuck, truck won't move at all in any range.
There is an updated kit with a new shaft with an oiling galley to feed lube oil to the shift fork so that it won't wear out again.

Easiest way is to drain the oil and filter it to see if there are any metal flakes in it from the fork wearing out. Also you will find chunks of melted plastic from the tabs. Look inside the drain hole, you will see the strainer for the oil pump inlet for the transfer case. All debris will gravitate to that area. If there are bits of melted plastic, make immediate plans for a transfer case rebuild.
You will not, I repeat, will not hear any telltale grinding noises, it will just quit on you one day and then you will be stuck.

I would go under neath your truck and unhook the linkage to the transfer case and put a cresent wrench on the shift cam and try to rotate it into 4-low. The early model 271 and 273 did have a oiling issue with the reduction ford and mainshafts, i see alot of them we get in as cores with this same problem.
