i remember a while back that delo was superior to the others(or at least most popular). but just a few days ago, i came a across a post that i cannot find anymore about rotella having more technology and engineering in it than any other oil out there. i am not interested in going the synthetic route at all, but now that delo is getting hard to find out here. is rotella a good choice or maybe even an improvement over the delo stuff?

All the major brands that meet API CI-4/SL are just as good as any other. The only practical difference is advertising and promotion. So DELO is just as good as Rotella, and Mobil is just as good as DELO and Motorcraft is just as good as any of them. So don't worry about the brand name - just be sure it meets API CI-4/SL.

The only reason DELO might be getting harder to find is if Chevron hasn't done a good job of promoting it to the truckers in your area. Retailers stock what sells, so if DELO is not selling, they won't stock it much longer. Around here it's still a popular choice and available at Sam's Club, Costco, Wal-Mart, and almost every big truck stop and many of the convenience-store truck stops. But Rotella is even more popular so it's even available at most supermarkets. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

BTW, do you know where Chevron came up with the name DELO? It's short for Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif

Delo and Delvac both seem to hold up better than Rotella for me. I grew up with Rotella, but I learned to like Delo even more. I'm looking to try Amsoil shortly when my BI's get tuned.

Check WestMarine/BoatUS (now the same) our stores here stock the Delo as well as the Chevron DexronIII/Mercon ATF which is one of the best Dino ATFs available for our trucks according to information provided by Hammer69. It also has no mention of the dreaded MerconV spec anywhere on the bottle.

Gotta disagree with the "popular" theory. My 'Stroke drinks DELO like Kool-Aid, about a gallon between changes. It burns Rotella at a rate of less than an QT per 5K interval. BTW, pretty cool info on the DELO acronym.

I just switched it up and tried Castrol Extra Traction Formula...any rumors or experiences on that stuff? It was at the same place I got my Cat EC-1 coolant from so I figured I would give it a whirl...

The vac comes from Vacuum oil company, in 1931 Socony merged with Vacuum oil company to become Socony-Vaccum, the same company that later becomes mobile. I'd say DELVAC could be a combination of Diesel Engine Lubrication, and a remnant of Vacuum in VAC.

...and they thought we'd never figure it out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
