This morning, when I turn the key to GP preglow (WTS), I got rapid clicking, then no attempt for starter to engage in start position (more rapid clicking from starter solenoid)? The feel of the key cylinder also feels weird. Between GP preglow and start turns off all dashboard power (guages go to zero).

Background: batteries are 1 year old, they were recharged last Wednesday from being drained from the horse trailer short.

Assistance needed...thanks,

Hugh

Hey you "Old Hippy", how goes it in "Hippy Land"? Kinda sounds like the starter solenoid on the starter. Got a "Life Time Warranty"? OkieG

Hey Baja-Okie, I need more help than name calling... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For the record, I'm 42, I've never been a hippie and don't like hippies and there aren't many "actual" hippies left on this planet (but I do know of one, my friend's father-in-law...sells art/junk at flea markets, hasn't had his own home in 30+ years, smokes weed everyday, etc.)

How do I check to make sure that it is starter/solenoid related? I would like to get my diesel baby back on the road asap.

My vote is batteries since they were drained before they may be toasted.

The hippies moved to Idaho, up around Cour Delene(sp?). I'll defer to the bad batteries/cables scenario also. Baja/Okie/******

Hummmm, my cables are looking worse and worse, maybe they are the problem. What materials do I need for a new set of cables?

I'll also test the batteries again, they have a Ford 3 year free replacement /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks guys,

Hugh

Hugh, try these places if ya want to just buy a new set. If not, go down to the marina and get some large cables and terminal ends. Take your VISA card or your "first born", they're gonna cost ya either way. OkieG

OOPS, I forgot to put in the links..here ya go.

I ordered some Custom Battery cables ($110, easy come easy go). Batteries were drained to 2 volts, I'll charge them back up and see how they check out.

Hey Hugh,
Are you sure they will be 100% free? They don't pro-rate their batteries? Do you know who the manufacturer of the batteries are? If it's a reputable name and they don't pro-rate, I'll start buying my batteries from Ford. Tim

It says right on the batteries, 3 year Free replacement.

After three years, then they are pro-rated. I'll take them in with the receipt and see what happens and get back to you.

The 3 are free, but when the pro rating comes into effect it is on the regular full price of the battery. The PR cost usually ends up being more than you paid when you bought them.......Thus the word Stealership.

I bought my set of Exide batteries through Sam's Club about two years ago. After about a year one of them started mysteriously leaking acid out of the caps on the top even though the truck hadn't been run in a couple of weeks. This was not a small weep. There was an acid puddle on the ground under the truck. I hosed it all off and neutralized the acid in the engine bay and could find no cracks in the case. Took the battery back to Sam's Club and they exchanged it free of charge no questions asked. Replacement battery has worked fine the past 10 months. No leaks, drips, weeps, seeps, starts fine. That was a weird one! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

My custom cables arrived after three weeks from ordering. Lucky for me my truck isn't my daily driver.

The new cables are awesome and my 15 year old cables were really (REALLY) bad. I installed them tonight after work.

I'll let you know what Ford says about my battery replacements,
