Just bought and installed a Southbend OFE got about 300 miles on it so I decided to try a mild boosted launch... The sucker slips big time. my stocker held up to dozens before it started to slip. This clutch is suppose to hold 400 horsepower but slips at just over 300? Has anyone else had issues with OFEs slipping? Just wondering if I should have went with Haisley or LUK? Thanks Tim

That clutch should be very stout. But it may need to "break in". I have heard of guys who had them slip in the beginning and then hold beautifully. You should be good.

I think my OFE was one of the best upgrades to my truck yet, I am extremely happy with it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif You are supposed to break it in for 300-500 miles I believe. I went 500-550 miles on mine before I installed my chip and injectors... honestly I think this is the first dissatisfied post I have seen for the South Bend. Maybe give them a call? They are extremely helpful.

I have about 500 or so miles on mine w/ no slipping issues at all.
My complaint is that it drags slightly once warmed up. It feels like the marcel grows or warps causing the clutch to no t release fully. I can hear the transmission input shaft start spinning if I hold the clutch down and shift into neutral. This forces the synchro to stop the shaft when I shift into gear to pull away.

I thought it was improving for a while but now it seems to be staying the same.
I plan to look at the clutch pedal linkage tomorrow to see if I can get a few mm more travel out of it.

Anyone else had this issue??? If so, how did you resolve it?

Thanks,
David

On the instructions that came in the box it says breakin time 250 miles of normal driving if slipping occurs put another 50 miles on it.. Don't get me wrong the clutch is as smooth as silk for normal driving but I bought it with the intent of doing injectors and some pulling with it. I have a 1100 mile trip comming up in about 4 days. I pull aprox. 13k will see how it does during and after the trip. Hopefully it just needs more "break-in" time. Thanks for your imput Tim

how are you doing a boosted launch with a standard.... do you have a line lock? OR do you have 3 legs? Hopefully youhavent glazed a new clutch already /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gif

Yep.. two footing three pedals. If its glazed by 2 attempts (very mild attempts) I'd be surprized. I put my stocker through much worse. If it still slips after or during my trip I'll pull it when I get back and see if its glazed. If it is glazed then shame on me and I'll eat whatever cost it is to resurface and for a new disc, I realize you have to pay to play and will learn from it. Dunno maybe it's easier to glaze or slip with so few miles? When I got mine from what I understood from reading what others had to say I was supposed to give it around 500 miles break in, but I remember the paper that came with it had a number considerably less, probably the 250 you mentioned. So I played it on the safe side. Not saying you did it wrong... but just, food for thought I guess. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

My South Bend Con O started slipping at about 6k miles. I had a mechanic take it apart Wednesday and he found a virtually new clutch. My local dealer installed new hydraulics 4 or 5 years ago while it was still under warranty, and 10k or 20k miles later the stock clutch started slipping. I took it back to the dealer who could find no problems, so I just figured I needed a new clutch. Last year, when I had the South Bend installed, the old clutch still looked pretty good. I didn't think too much of it, and thought the problem would be solved. My current mechanic (not the dealer) is baffled since the hydraulics are non adjustable. I'm starting to think I should just have him throw another hydraulic system at it.

Give Peter a call at SBC. He's really good about answering questions and resolving issues.

The thing with these single discs are that it's designed to HOLD power, not perform well in the friction zone when you slip a clutch. If you want it to grip well while slipping, look into a dual disc, like for sled pulling or drag racing. SBC has applications for each.

The OFE's and FE's aren't designed for excessive slipping, like a boosted launch. You'll glaze it. I've seen this happen at a sled pull, where one of my buddy's couldn't even get the tires to spin out of the hole!
