HI, I have a 1999 powerstroke completely stock execpt for K&N air filter. A few weeks ago I was having a problem getting it to get up to speed, it was stalling. Well I came back home and parked it. I went on a trip for a few weeks and when I returned I noticed that there was some oil under the truck. I checked it and it appears that it was 4 quarts low. I'm only about 480 miles into the last ford dealer oil change. I added the oil into the oil filler tube and forgot to put the cap back on it and oil started blowing out of it. I turned the truck off and closed the hood scared that something has gone wrong. Any ideas short of new engine?

Thanks,

Generally there are 2 reasons for oil blowing out of the dip stick or oil filler.
1 over full on oil.
2 engine compression blow by.
Seeing you have a K&N air filter my guess is #2 caused by dusting and the poor filtering of the K&N.

Unfortunately, FordMastertech may be right. A free flowing air filter means less restriction and less filtering of small particles. Engine "dusting" is a very real concern with a diesel.

You want a filter that traps the most particulates, not the one that flows the most air.

Those K&N filters have been responsible for dusting many diesel engines. I too think blowback is what is going on and that is not a good sign at all. K&N should be sued for allowing these filters to be placed in a diesel truck. I would either unloaded it quick or be prepared for some big $$$$$ at the diesel shop.

if you've got that much crankcase pressure you might have cracked rings on one or more cylinders. disable the computer and have someone crank the truck over while your under it. listen to the starter. a change in pitch will indicate a cylinder with no compression and no resistence to the starter. what kind of K&N did you have, a rectangular or cone filter? it makes a difference, the rectangular ones leak horribly at the box seal. when was the last time you serviced the filter. once a year is the longest i would let any oiled/cotton filter go, more often in a dusty area.

if you can get a compression tester from someone and check the compression for all 8 cylinders.
