I had a 7.3 and a 6.0 and changed my oil every 10k miles. My new 6.7 computer is telling me I need to change my oil around every 7k miles. Should I do it at 7k or can I wait until 10K? I got a sweet deal on a 100k maintenance plan but it is only good for 10 oil changes. At the 7k rate I would need 14 vs 10 oil changes. Thanks!

The thing is, the 7.3, nor the 6.0 did exhaust regens. Many guys would do blackstone testing, that indicated a 10K interval was ok. Starting with the 6.4, and now the 6.7, fuel is dumped into the exhaust during regen to burn out the dpf. I believe some of that leads to additional fuel getting into the oil over time. Its your truck, but I'd stick with the 7500 mile intervals when the computer tells you. That's only 3 extra oil changes over the 100K miles.

I have no first hand knowledge of the 6.7L other than I drove one for about a week for my former company. I drove it after Ford put a new engine in (for a price!!) because the guy who normally drove it (in the Atlanta area, pulling a trailer everyday) never changed the oil. They said he had 97K miles on the factory fill!!!

I can't remember the repair price, but it was staggering. I think they had to replace the entire engine, fuel system and exhaust.

Even my old 7.3 is sensitive to oil type and condition. I wouldn't even stretch it out to the limits of the oil minder.

As an aside, what levels of fuel dilution is everyone seeing? At 4-5K OCIs, I have 2.7% with 80% highway miles. What would you guys consider the limit to be? 5%? 7%?

I've had my 2011 since new and have about 80k on it now. Oil changes have been done whenever the monitor pops up and says it is time. For me, this has been about every 7,500 miles (+/- a few hundred). From what i remember reading a while back, Ford put an extensive amount of time into getting the sensors right to take into account all sorts of different parameters (fuel dilution, how much towing has done etc.). This was supposedly a significant improvement over the ones that were simply reminders based on time/mileage. Your call, but if you plan to hold on to it for a while...a few extra oil changes will be worth the security in my opinion.

I change mine once a year. I only put 3-4 thousand miles on it towing a fifth wheel camper, and then the running around locally. Truck mostly sits in the garage from Nov.30 to March 1st when the weather gets as cold as -20F. I don't want to take it out in the road salt. Usually change oil early spring just as a preventative maintainance. It is a 2012 with 9500 miles on it. Hopefully it will be trouble free for a long time ( but I can't wait to see the 17's ).

I follow the severe duty maintenance schedule since I bought the truck. Just did my 135k service. Every 5000 miles oil change. . and 15k for fuel and air filters. I run Rotella T5 and factory filters. I have had no issues. Knock on wood.

Previously I owned an early build '03 6.0. Put 325k on it.
Only lost a HPOP at 220k. Original turbo, head gaskets, egr cooler and FICM. . all intact. I changed my oil in that truck every 3000. At the risk of sounding like the OP's daughter. . there is no way I would have run a 10k OC interval on the 6.0. The HEUI system and turbo depend on clean oil. Just my $0.02.

Are you sure you didn't misread something? I am not seeing a smart ass response above.

FWIW, I have a 7.3 and I do Blackstone and I run a great Synthetic Rotella T-6.
Blackstone results have suggested 7,500 mile OCI when I drain the oil at 5K.
Just providing this info to suggest maybe your 10K mile OCI's were too high and not a good comparsion.
Not trying to be a smart-ass.

My most recent Blackstone report showed 1% fuel in oil...this was a 5500 mile interval. Previous reports showed 0.5% fuel in oil. This last report, they recommended going 7500 miles, as there was plenty of oil life left. I do a mix of towing, town, and highway.

I believe Ford says up to 5% fuel in oil is acceptable. The minder does not track this but rather things like fuel consumption, hours, idle hours, mileage. I doubt it tracks tow miles since the fuel usage will tell it that and the weight of the trailer.

OP - if you advocate for something outside the published guidelines and common sense you're going to get riffed. Sack 'O Tomato, sheesh.

I've always leaned on 5,000 mi intervals since my new 1996 F250 diesel. I drove a lot as a tradesman and found counting 5, 10, 15 was eaiser to remember instead of writing it down.

Well by the time I sold my 2006 F250 Diesel, last month, I was using Rotella T6 5-W40 with RevX friction modifier and was going 7,500 mi +/-.

I just considered it the cheapest insurance i could buy.

1996 = 187,000 mi with no engine trouble.
2006 = 106,900 mi with no engine trouble.

Thats my thoughts.

Replacing RevX with AR9100 would be even cheaper with better results according to a lot of forum threads I've seen.

I agree the opinions do lean towards AR9100. I like to deal locally first and that's what my diesel shop had at the time I needed it. They do have AR 9100 now so I'll reinvestigate when I get my 2016. I expect it any day now.

Blackstone's method of checking fuel dilution has always been in question on other forums. For me, I stopped using Blackstone after the cost for a UOA including TBN went to $38.00 (and I used them for about 40 UOAs/VOAs prior to that). I use Polaris for $19.00 which includes TBN.

Thanks for the info. Is this the kit offered on the Amsoil website?

I have heard folks question Blackstone in the past, but if there is something better, I am all for it.

Thanks,
Cale
