I have an 02 6 spd and am going to change the oil in it. Can I use a Manual Transmission lube in it instead of the ATF fluids. I bought some Valvoline Maxlife ATF to put in the trans and transfer case and just wondered if I would be better off with regular mtf in just the trans. I will put the atf in the transfer case. Truck does not get drove in the winter and it lives on a horse trailer thru the summer.

I guess it depends. Anything besides ATF is going to put you on the wrong side of the factory recommendations, so people will be safe and say no. But I know Redline makes a MTL specifically to replace regular ATF spec fluids. Maybe Amsoil does too, but that's all I can think of. I'd like to try the Redline fluid in mine at some point. But keep in mind that those fluids maintain the ATF viscosity. I think they differ in the add packs, (ie higher extreme pressure additives, no friction modifiers and less detergents).

If you want to put a higher viscosity oil like gear lube (even synthetic), I think that's a bad idea.

I tried the Maxlife and liked it. It quieted the tranny down some and helped with the shifting.

Maybe I will just put the Maxlife in it. It has lived this long on the factory fill. 130,000 miles and no problems. Thanks for the replys. I thought that 75w-80 MTL and ATF were not that far apart in viscosity.

If I am not mistaken, ZF6 on the 6.0 motors vs. the 7.3 motors called for MTF not ATF.

Why ?

Hey I have a manual in my shop now. Offhand BS Hauler, do you recall the refill amount?
Nick the ZF-6 needs 6 quarts.

Ford changed the t-case lube from ATF to their "Transfer Case Lube" sometime after 2003 models (Owner's manual still says ATF for '03). I believe the ZF6 still called for ATF.

Leftover Mercon relabeled transfer case lube. Apparently Mercon V has been reformulated to not kill our transmissions but somehow it will still take out the transfer case. Best to stick to Mercon in both. I use Valvoline or Castrol.
