I use my truck to pull a lot of heavy loads though now just a travel trailer. I have had issues with losing water but after reading here it seems normal for that to happen. This time though I left the cap off as i was refilling my bucket to pour it in and the bottle started spewing an oily mixture. After everything I have read and my past mechanic days I deduced the oil cooler is leaking. What I need to know is do I need a new cooler or just all the o-rings and basically regasket this same part????

no you need a new cooler they leak internally, i guess its posible for the gasket to do it but never seen it. get the oil cooler and the more expensive intake gasket set from the dealer and you will have everything you need to fix it but oil and coolant.

oil in cooler

Just called on parts and they are expensive AGAIN but hey... any way one dealer said it is most likely the top cooler and the other said it was probably the radiator type one. Which is the most likely culprit?

My EGR cooler went out and a week later the oil cooler went. I would change them both at the same time. I really dont think either that it is normal for the truck to be consuming water. Usually the Oil Cooler takes out the EGR so they are most likely both bad. When you do the oil cooler there is a screen in the bottom of the valley that you should check. Mine was fine but I changed it anyway since I had everything already torn apart.

delete the EGR system and replace the oil cooler, then only one bird left to go out. Based on year of truck you wont get a CEL and performance is'nt affected at all.

The EGR cooler went out and was replaced last year. I just found a way to get rid of it all together but that will happen later. I did get the oil cooler replaced and the truck did start and drive about a mile. I have a very loud hiss which i know is an exhaust leak. I know i already had a leak cause I could smell it in the cab. Did my playing with the turbo cause the leak to worsen or the y pipe to just finish cracking after reinstall? Also during the test drive trying to get it all up to temp it decided to spit and sputter and I had no fuel control then it died and would not restart. Is the computer getting wrong info due to this leak and now not letting it start?
