Ok Pro's. Once again I need your help. A friend of mine has a 04 and took it in for an oil leak. The valve cover gaskets were replaced, but the dealer said there was still an oil leak due to a pressurized oil system caused by the K&N filter the previous owner had installed 6 weeks earlier. They told him the engine was not rebuildable and the engine would have to be replaced. I find it very hard to believe that Ford would make an engine that was a throw away. What are your thoughts on this?

Well first off, not all dealership shops are equal. Some of the smaller shops don't rebuild engines, some of the smallest don't do anything but swap engines. The larger the shop, the more in-depth they "usually" go.

Secondly, and as far as the K&N... I don't like or recommend the K&N but the "an oil leak due to a pressurized oil system caused by the K&N filter" part sounds like a real stretch.
I really don't even understand what's being said in that statement. Someone must have misunderstood, mis-quoted or mis-spoke.

I smell something stinky

Isn't the oil system pressurized anytime the engine is running (oil pump is pumping)? Isn't crankcase pressure relieved via the intake AFTER the air filter?

Ok, found a little more out about this. It is an 02 with a 7.3(my fault. Mods please move if necessary). The truck has 108k on it. The dealership is saying the crankcase pressure is pushing oil out the VC gaskets. Is there a PCV on these that would relieve this? I am used to the old 7.3's like my 95 has. These are different animals to me, but I would tend to believe these would be similar in a lot of ways too.
