I Just purchased a 2003 F350 with the 7.3 Diesel.

I've herd many good things about how dependable this motor is? Hope this is true?

Anyhow, The guy i bought it from said that it had a Rear main seal leak which seemed apropriate considering it would leak like hell after just sitting there off for a few minutes. It leaks worse when its nose up in the drive way.

WELL I paid to get the Rear main replaced and that wasn't the problem?? So you can imagine I am frustrated for throwing away money.

Can anyone tell me if they have had this problem?? The oil is running down the back side of the motor. And it looks like a small lake on top of the moter which I assumed was fuel from a bad fuel plate... its actuall oil.

Please help

Thank You

Welcome to TDS...

Usually the oil leaks from the High pressure oil lines to the heads...Get it cleaned up & dry, & you should be able to see where it starts..Others may have pictures....Sorry to hear about the rear main thing ...It is a rare problem...

No , not for the lines , You have to find it first ...from what I read here , it could be from the turbo pedestal also ...Try & pin it down ....

Look at the first picture on this page. You are looking at the engine from the front. This is the view of the HPOP in front of the fuel filter. You will find a hose coming from the HPOP to each of the cylinder heads. These provide oil pressure to fire the injectors and may see up to 2800-3000 psi with a good pump. Doesn't take much of a leak at those pressures to lose a whole lotta oil. This would be my first choice. Find the lines at the pump and follow them to the cylinder heads. Look at all the connections. If any are wet you have likely found the culprit. There is an o-ring kit that costs less than $100 (probably even at Ford's inflated prices) that can fix these leaks. Sorry you suffered a misdiagnosis on the rear main seal.

Re: Oil on Top of the motor in the Valley ?? Help Please!

I just bought a 2001 F-350 about 2 weeks ago, just started doing the exact same thing today. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif where is a good place to get the o-ring kit from?

Here's a very good write-up on the fix of the HPOP line leaks.

HPOP manual HERE so you can get an idea of what your dealing with (it's a PDF file, so you can download and save it).

The fittings (o-rings) on side of the pump, and the plug at the back are what often leak. Easy to fix, though.

Good luck...

This is in the same area, but a little different. Crawled under the truck to change the oil and thougth my rear main was gone, but thanks to you guys I realized it was probably the HPOP. My early 99 had a lake of oil in the valley. After reading all the post and doing the research on all the possibilities of the leaks, I was hell bent and ready to fix it. I had purchased the IPR rebuild kit, and the Ford HPOP O-ring kit (3 o-rings, tube of loctite, instructions). Then low and behold it was something else. On the HPOP under the oil lines on the very bottom drivers side of the HPOP. There is a 13mm plug that had damn near fallen out?? I removed it all the way cleaned it up, and then went on a search for an o-ring. No one has been able to tell me what this plug is or what size o-ring it takes. Ford says it calls for a new HPOP. Luckily one of my buds had a little baggie of Viton O-rings all assorted. He had one thank god, but it doesn't help if I don't know what it is or what size o-ring it should be! Please help.

Finally found what I was looking for sort of! The 13mm plug on the bottom is called the "HPOP drain plug", I had never heard of it. Ford says to buy a new HPOP, and it is a PITA to get to. Thanks ANDY! I will be at International tomorrow speaking with a couple of their techs to see if I can track down the proper o-ring for it. Just in case anyone else is leaking oil out of the HPOP, not associated with the IPR or the three O- rings that commonly fail. Thanks for all the input! I will post any further asap! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Thanks to TDS. I just happened to be the first to post. Others would have posted the link. I just saved it to my HD. I do that a lot. I can't post a link to a file on my HD. Lots of guys here would have done the same.

Never the less. You are welcome. Very glad to help. That's why I spend so much time here, learning and helping others learn.

Even Oops.
