I have my '99 F450 in the shop for an oil leak at the oil pan. Before I took it in I found the leak to be coming from the dipstick fitting on the passenger side of the oil pan. The shop is saying that the oil pan needs to be dropped in order to fix the leak but in order to do that they need to pull the engine. Can anyone tell me if this is true that the engine needs to be pulled in order to drop the oil pan? Seems to be a pretty crappy design if this is true.

Oil pans can be done in chassis, or with the engine removed. The "book" procedure is to remove the engine...

To pull the pan you need to pull the motor. To fix your dipstick leak, do a search and you will find many people have fixed the dipstick leak with the motor in the truck. International sells a kit to fix the dipstick fitting. Many people have done this with the motor in the truck. You need to take your time with this, but I remember reading that this has been done before.

Yes standard protocall at the ford shop is to pull the engine, drop the pan then fix the stick.... However, it can be done with the motor and pan in place. It is a bit of a tricky affair and one slip of the hand and a dropped part will send you right back to the expensive engine pull and pan drop.
