When I first start my truck in the morning, the factory oil pressure gauge takes a few seconds to register pressure. The engine will be running, with no pressure reading, then it will jump up to normal. The truck starts fine, and the pressure reads normal anytime after that. Just wondering if it's a pump issue or a guage issue, or if anyone else has this "problem"

Hi.
The oil pump on these trucks is very reliable and should not be a
cause for concern. On the other hand the oil pressure gauge is just
an on and off switch which will not tell you anything. It is really
an idiot light type deal. The best thing for peace of mind is to
instal a good quality gauge.
Cheers.

Re: Oil pump or gauge?

I second what Brian just said. I have both the stock pressure sending unit and a real pressure gage sending unit mounted on top of the HPOP reservoir. The real pressure gage can vary from 75 to 20 psi and the factory pressure gage doesn't move off center of Normal. The factory gage is a switch that turns ON when it senses pressure. That's is all it does.

Re: Oil pump or gauge?

O.k. I'm just worried about having to replace the oil pump.

this is my first diesel, and I've had oil pumps go on gas engines before.

Me thinks me a bit paranoid. I'm realizing diesel parts are expensive.

Thanks guys.

Re: Oil pump or gauge?

The good thing about these powerstrokes is that they will not crank or run w/o oil. The low pressure lube oil pump supplies the high pressure pump that fires the injectors. No oil=no fire. Neat huh? Its the gauge, dont pay it any attention.

I assumed you did just didn't want any disaster, well... I guess the starter would take a dump before any real damage occured. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
