Hello, I was on my way home today, and as i pulled down my street i saw an oil trail behing me. I parked and low and behold oil running from the motor. All the accesories were oily and a puddle under the truck. It looked as if maybe the front seal was leaking. I checked the oil which was about two quarts low and fired it back up. Here is where i cant figure it out, it would not leak again now i feel as if i cant trust it without glueing my eyes to the oil pressure guage? any ideas thanks.

Being on the accessories would lead me as you were to the front of the engine. Front seal or fuel pump/gasket. Have there been any repairs lately, ie waterpump.

No there werent any repairs done to my knowledge. I have put about 5000 miles on it since i bought it. The leak is still present but not gushing anymore I just cant pinpoint where it is coming from. I thought maybe it could be the front seal but everything is so wet it is hard to tell.

Only thing to do is clean it up........

Have you done an oil/filter change yet. What filter and how many US qts/litres?

If not the front seal then possibly the front corners of the pan to block area adjacent to the front seal......

Please be so kind as to put much needed info in your signature, go to "My Account" at the top of the page then "Settings and options"....... "Edit Signature" put "all known" particulars for your truck/van in the signature block, any other info you feel worthwhile in other parts of this area. Fill in the "geographic location" too it is just as important, members can then direct you to the best known suppliers for parts, repairs, fuel etc closest you by location/ area/country. You could be just around the corner from a member willing to assist you or a parts store with what you need..
THANK YOU

Thanks for the info guys. I did update my sig and location. I am going to have a local shop look at it next week. I just dont have the time to tear into it and it is my daily driver. I did change the oil and i used a powerstroke filter. And i filled it until the dipstick said i was good. I think it was a little over 2.5 gallons with the extra capacity of the psd filter.

Speaking of dipstick, when i check the oil the one side of the stick is always reading about double of what the other side is. It all depends on which way you put it in the tube.

Put the dipstick in the tube with the loop of the handle facing toward the center of the engine. I don't know why it seems all dipsticks need to be put in so that the writing is upside down or the handle is farther away.

You appear to have over filled it by my calculations.......You could try driving it again now the level is lower...... but I don't think there is anything to "tear into".

DieselDon wrote this info.....

Oil consumption, and the proper checking of the oil levels in Ford diesels comes up periodically. Ford dipsticks are calibrated for hot oil. The 10 quarts in the IDI engines expand about 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart as the oil heats up, and contracts the same amout after cooling. If you check the oil first thing in the morning ( which I grew up doing ) the engines will all indicate oils level below full, but when checked hot, will ( after a 10 minute drain time ) the oil level is usually at full. If you are checking the oil cold, and keeping the level at full, you are actually over filling the engine which will burn of the extra rapidly.

Suggestion: Check oil hot after 10 minute drain time.
Don't add until level reaches add line ( 2 quarts ).

In my days at Ford this often cured, or at least improved, the apparent oil consumption complaints.

Thats a handy piece of information. I have not stopped driving it, it has stopped gushing like it was but it is still leaking from somewhere which it has done since i bought it. I think that the rear main seal is leaking also because it is dripping from the bellhousing. I think i will have the front and rear seals replaced. I hate a vehicle that always leaves its mark.
