Are there any options for our 5 speeds? If we could by a different 5th gear that had a lower ratio could do the same thing as a rear gear change. Could be significantly cheaper also?

Just wondering?

I have done some more searching and I can't find anything but a stock rebuild. Is it that wierd to change the ratio of a gear in a transmision? I know rock crawlers do it all the time.

I thought there was 4 different gear ratios for the ZF trans. like the gasser versions had different ratios then the diesels and 2 tons had even differnt ones yet.

maybe I am thinking of the T18/T19. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

That wold be cool. I know the 93-94 5 speeds had different ratios, but I am ot sure about top gear. Who would know somethig like about this? I don't even know who rebuilds these things. Only thing you hear about is the auto's getting rebuilt.

Unfortunatly guys, the OD ratio is materially the same. To see the ratios of the various trannies go to Gear Vendors site, they have ratio charts for all popular trans.
At the risk of a hijack here, I have found the 1st gear ratio of the ZF42 used in the IDI trucks and the 94-95 PSD's to be more useful. The problem is the torque rating of the trans is less than the ZF47 in the 96 and 97's. My question is what is really the difference? Anybody actually break a ZF42, or have any premature failures? I'd swap my 47 for a 42 in a minute if it didnt break. The first gear is actually useful to take off!

I dont see how that could be a highjack, as it is related. but I also wanted to BTT this, I am still curious as to whats available also. I thought I had something saved that listed the differnt ratios but guess not. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Don't think I've ever read of a gear breaking off in any of the trucks? It's probably rated another 5 ftlbs of torque over the old version, but everyone with injectors is running close to double the torque and not breaking anything. I'm not a transmission guy by any stretch but I would bet it's pretty darn safe.

Ya I think Bean's truck is a 95 5spd. That thing must have a billion footpounds of torque. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So just to be sure..........

Our OD is a 1 to 1 ratio?

If so I can see why there is no available OD options.

If our OD is less than 1 to 1 then variants of OD gears should be available.

Nest question would be how hard is it to install?
