Overdrive Light turns on by itself!

I have a 2001 F350 with an automatic transmission. While driving, I frequently notice that the "overdrive off" indicator has come on by itself, but the transmission is still in overdrive. I can press the OD button and the transmission will function properly, but the light stays on, even with repeated pressing of the OD button. If I move the lever to another position, the light will turn off.

My truck has 99935 miles. I took it to the dealership on saturday and the service techs did not seem too interested in the problem. They kept saying it was a bad sensor or button. I think it is a software issue.

Any Ideas as to the cause and a good fix?

It's probably a shorted wire where the wires enter the shifter inside the steering column. Remove the three screws that hold the cover and you should be able to see the problem.

I think you may be right. While I was at work today, I played with the shifter and the light turns on and off. Near the end of the day, it did not do that, however. I will definitely tear into the steering colum sometime soon and look at it.
