The display gradually got dimmer over the last year or so and just went completely out. This is the display for temp, mileage, compass heading and miles to go.

The dimmer switch used to affect the brightness even as it gradually got dimmer until now as I have no lights at all.

Can't be a fuse as the manual shows the same fuse runs several other things that still work, and can't be a bad wire as it was a gradual weakening.

Anyone have an idea what is wrong? Also how do you remove the console cover? I see the two latches inside the compartment but can't see how to release them.

I too have the same issue. truck is a 2000 cc 4X4 w/ auto trans. truck has 176K.

Same exact scenario on the overhead console. gradually got dimmer and then yesterday May 12, 2007 it quit working.

Hope someone has help for us. I have tried searching but keep getting time outs.

Arisley,

Thanks man I thought I had seen something on this. I had been looking at ford forgotten site last year regarding the idm mod page. and must have glanced at the console page.
I hate it when you cannot search and you cannot remember. I got the link now thanks to you.

Thank you , sounds like that may be it.

Any suggestions on how the console comes down?

Not sure on that one, I will bet Chiltons knows, I will look tonight when I get home if someone hasn't posted it I will.

I created a file in my documents and save anything I come across that might come in handy there. If it is a web site I have a file in my favorites for truck sites.

Let your computer remember stuff, then all you have to remember is what you named it. LOL

Grab the console towards the windshield and pull straight down, the clips that hold it are pretty tight and it may feel like you're going to break it, but don't worry. Once the front pops down, it slides forward and the rear clips release.

Thanks, console came down just like you said.

One of the resistors was loose just like you said also.

console came down fine. Had all 3 resistors loose on one end. Re-soldered all three and life is good again. Atleast for my wife who drives this truck. My truck, the one in my sig, gave me a fit this morning as the retainer nut on the dipstick housing came loose and let a little oil out. but that is not for this section. Our old trucks have a place of their own on the forum.

Super glue, duct tape, or zip ties, don't think WD40 would work for this one.

Thanks LeRoy.
I’m not sure if the ones in the junk yard would have the same issues as mine. Then there is always trying to find the time to go “junking”. I need about 4 hours added to the day for myself.

Thanks,
Bru

Can you explain how the console comes down.
I got it to pop open at the front but for all my trying I cant get it to move forward.
The headliner has come loose around it. I got it fixed and it looks OK, but I am still with out electronic computer.
I was afraid to push much harder than all I had it will move side to side, but not forward.
does the console come off the black plastic or is it all one piece?
any help.. I am making a trip in 2 weeks i would like to have my computer with temps and direction back up.. Like all the mileage is never right, but it sure looks good to get 30mpg most trips and travels
thanks for your help,
randy

Lets see if I remember after you get the clips loose there was 2 plastic catches 1 on each side toward the back that you have to push inward to get it to come down. But mine was so brittle from the head it basically fell apart.

It just pulls straight down. No latches or catches. There are three or four retaining clips. Pull straight down in the front and in the back. It will feel like it is going to break but it won't. Loud pop and you will be holding it in your hand.

Thanks all, I finally got my overhead down.
3 resistors loose.. I will work on that now.
I found out the overhead console is 2 pieces, the factory color of interior and then a black plastic piece that is mounted to ceiling with clips in front and swings in and up from back side(kind of locks in)so it is really 2 pieces. be careful here. I had been trying to remove the black piece and broke one clip on the front end, when really all I needed was to remove the factory colored(tan) piece. I have my computer board out and will work on soldering it all back together later today.
I followe dall your suggestions and just grabbed and pulled. made a loud noise, which I was like "OH well!" dropped down into my hands..
So I am happy..
Thanks again,
randy
