I'm pretty new here, but from what I've read...they're not very accurate. You're better off calculating it by hand.

As far as how it works, it's magic!

I've found out that the overhead can be used as reference only. My actual miles per gallon are slightly more than the overhead shows.

I've probably calculated mpg's maybe a dozen times in four years.
Attempting to be accurate, I painstakenly filled the tank right to the lip of the filler.
Each time the MPG calcuator has been right on the money. Imagine that!

Mine is spot or within 1 mpg most fill ups with out a HP chip. I think it just uses simple math to average the mpg. Fuel rate, speed, fuel used/left, miles traveled....

If you have any kind of programmer or chip, the only thing the display is good for is a compass and thermometer. Mine says I get 28 MPG (I wish) actually I only get about 18 when calculated by hand.

Can anyone tell me how this computer works or how accurate it is mine seems fairly accurate??

In a bone stock truck they are pretty accurate, any hp mods dealing with the PCM (chips, tuners, 10K, etc) will render it useless.

It's kinda like the federal government budget...you get numbers, but they are not reliable. I use a credit card for all my fuel and write the mileage on each receipt. Every so often, I collect them and figure my mileage.

The day I got my F-350, I shut the overhead idiot display off and it's been off since. If I had been able to, I would have selected an XLT rather than the Lariat. The overhead display is worth than worthless, IMO.

I love my overhead display, It makes it so I can prove that my truck get a solid 48mpg........

it must be the split fire spark plug I got in the glove box......

Mine was extremely accurate before the chip.

I've done mileage checks on several chip settings. The higher the HP setting, the higher the mpg reading on the overhead display and the lower the actual mpg via hand calculation. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks,
