So I’m hoping someone can help me out. I have a 2002 F250 7.3. When pulling my stock trailer, even on flat land, with the overdrive off the transmission overheats. The strange thing is if I keep the overdrive on the trans temp never moves. Has anyone ever had this issue and where should I start looking for solutions? Thanks for your help I advance.

The first thing to look at is the transmission fluid level. Check it with the transmission warmed up, in park, and the engine idling.

Are you sure your torque converter is locking up? It should lock up in third gear, but I don't believe it does in second or first.

One way to tell if it is not properly locking up is to accelerate at less than WOT and watch the tach. If it races ahead of the speed, the converter probably is slipping, which would heat up the fluid.

The converter can lock in first and second gear if the pedal is more than 75% towards the floor. It locks at much lower pedal positions in third and fourth gears.

WOT is Wide Open Throttle. That's when the accelerator pedal is on the floor.
