Ok, I must be having a senior moment, but I can not find the parking brake adjustment on my Y2K F-350. Is there one?

The truck stops fine, and I have plenty of meat on the rear brakes, but I can push the parking brake pedal to the floor and it will sometimes not hold the truck on even a moderate incline.

I have a turbo temp monitor and need to leave the 6 speed in neutral with the parking brake applied so that the truck can cool down and then shut off. This is becoming an increasingly dangerous operation with the parking brake not holding.

Park brake shoes and adjusters are tucked inside the rear brake rotor "hat".... Follow the cables back and, opposite to where the cables connect, you will see a conventional looking, drum brake adjustment plug. Behind the plug is a star wheel that is adjsuted in the conventional manner....

Be careful leaving a 6spd running in neutral w/only E-brake on.

The emergency brake cables are prone to fail.

I carry an aluminum wheel chock that must have fallen off the back of a telephone truck. And I use it.... anyone w/a 6speed should.

try and turn both sides the same amount(rotations) i put mine on jack stands and turned the tire as i notched the star adjuster, you'll feel the pads start to grab the hub. then i backed it off a full turn

Correct me if I'm wrong, but back in the old days, you could adjust your rear drum brakes by backing up while holding slight pressure on the brake pedal. I noticed that when I back out of my driveway, or parking space, that I hardley ever have to touch the brakes because I'm moving so slow. Well I tried backing up while holding the brakes and it did work! My parking brake pedal gets tight about half way down now. However, it still won't hold the truck unless I'm parked on level ground. So I Carry a big orange plastic chock and use it on the front drivers side tire so hopefully I will see it before I get back in the truck.

The Parking Brake adjusters on these trucks are NOT 'Self Adjusting."
So backing up & applying the brakes will do nothing to adjustment. My brakes do not hold as well as they should because I had a leaking rear axle oil seal & the brake shoes on the right side got soaked in rear diff fluid. That, coupled with the fact that my diff fluid has traction modifier in it has made the parking brake almost useless. The ONLY way to fix it is to replace BOTH sets of shoes.

Thanks EXCAV8TER, I already knew that & my adjustment is as tight as they should be. As I said before, I know why mine are not holding as they should & replacement is the only fix. The Wheel Seal leak has been fixed but the brake shoes on the right side still are soaked & no amount of heating or cleaning will make them good again.
I used to be a Test Driver for a Brake Manufacturer & I am fully aware of what is a good brake shoe or pad & what is not. Oil or grease on brake material is not good & the ONLY CORECT fix if they have these materials on them require replacement.
But thanks for the information anyhow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As always, you guys came through in spades. I'll make the adjustment as soon as I get back to Philly from Waco.

Thanks again,
Karl

This is probably obvious, but I haven't had to play with my brakes yet. The main braking is accomplised by disks, but the e-brake is a drum and shoe setup? I've never had rear disks before. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

You have it right the drum is in the inner part of the disk.

Yep. 4-wheel disk brakes, but the parking brake is a drum brake inside the hub of the rear disks. It's called a "drum in hat". I guess the disk and hub sorta looks like a flat-brimmed cowboy hat? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Ordinary old-fashioned drum brakes for the parking brake, but without the automatic adjusters that most late-model cars with rear drum brakes now have.
