Quick question. Which plug do I pull out to find out what kind of rods I have? I'm in the middle of an oil change and figured I'd check it out while I'm there. Took one out and antifreeze came out so I quickly plugged it back up. Thanks!

Great, thanks for the reply. I'm hoping my trucks one of the few 2001's that came with forged but I'm prolly not that lucky. I'll post the results.

What is the production date of your truck and or the date on the valve cover would be even better.

Mid October of 2000 was the change from Forged to PMRs. They then ran out of PMRs and used Forged rods for a short while until the PMRs came back for ever. One member on here had an early December 2000 truck with forged rods.

07 JUN 01 is what the valve cover says and the truck production date is 06/01. Prolly really slim chance of having Forged huu? Whatcha think?

Never got to pull the plug out to see earlier today. Didn't have a 5/16 tool to get it out. Guess I'll pick one up tomorrow. Can you check it with all the oil in?

Chances are closer to none... than slim.

I am in the same boat with a 06/2001 production date.

The crank throws rotate well below the pan rail, so it is not going to rotate in the oil. It is not real easy to see in the hole with a light in the way. I have never bothered to try. If you pay attention to the pictures showing where and what to look for, there is not a pan on that engine.....

if i recall my production date is 3-01 so i might be on the fringe of having them i certainly hope i do since it would give me a good excuse to throw propane at it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Doubtful again. They only used the forged rods for a very short period, not months and months.

The latest I have seen was early December of 2000.

When did they start using the Powdered Metal Rods in the PSD? My engine production date is 04/30/00. Is there a Service Bulletin regarding this? Every time I've been involved with powdered parts in aircraft has caused problems, especially with high stress parts such as gears.

[/ QUOTE ] So I may have the forged rods as the date on my valve covers is 10-9-00? I sure hope so as I am thinking about selling my Mustang in my sig. and then maybe dumping about 8-10 grand into the truck. I was thinking BTS trans, Mini-me's , and H2e,and possibly stealth pump. What do you guys think? Should that get me close to 500HP? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Yes you should have forged rods as long as that is the original engine to the truck. All Ford replacements had PMRs. So I would verify they are for sure.

And as far as your combination, I believe it will be closer to 450 than 500. But a good dyno will tell the facts.

But shortly there after they ran out of PMRs and used forged rods for a very short time until they got more PMRs forever.
