Just wanted to let everyone know that if anyone wants to override the safety feature on this unit. They need to make sure that the illumination wire is connected. Then start your truck. When you see the "Loading something" (Can't remember exactly what it says) turn your parking lights on then off three times. The system will now let you watch DVD's or make changes to the navigation system while driving.

When I first heard about it, my system didn't respond. It turned out that the installer failed to hook up the illumination wire. Once we hooked it up, works like a charm.

So you have to do that every time you start the truck...bummer!!! I was thinking of upgrading to the Z1 as it offers better functionality with my iPod adapter...but I would have preferred a more "permanent" solution to the unlock.

I wonder how hard it would be to hook up an automated circuit of some kind...something that would automagically pulse that wire 3 times for you. It would have to have an adjustable delay before starting the "blinking", so you could tweak it to be "just right" based on how long the unit takes to get to the "loading" screen.

Maybe the electronics gurus here will design something and post it so you can make a trip to good ole radioshack and do it up.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to watch and see how this plays out.

Does this procedure have to be done every time you start the truck?

How are you liking the unit? What accessories did you get - Bluetooth, IPOD adaptor, etc? I hope someone can find out how to make a bypass that is more permanent like the circuit Dennis mentioned.

Yes, you have to do it everytime you start the truck. I'm hoping that someone comes up with something that is automatic, but until then, I turn the lights on and off three times.

I love the unit, I have the XM radio, and the rear camera. The blue tooth module isn't out yet. I'll buy one as soon as they are available. I really like the Library. As you listen to CD's, the music is recorded on the hard drive. I never have to put the CD back in. The mapping software redraws very fast and everything is fairly easy to use. I am sure there are lots of options I haven't figured out yet. I guess I'll have to read the manual.

I think you could do it with the PAC TR-7 module. It comes configured by default to work as the video bypass for Alpine head units. But, it is programmable. ~$20 on eBay.

The programming for the Alpine is to wait until the truck is on, delay, pulse the foot brake, pulse the e-brake, then pulse the foot brake again. If it can do that, I guess it can probably do what you need.

I think you can access the programming instructions online at PAC's website, if you want to confirm that it will do what you want.

Oh, and if you are thinking of upgrading anyway, check out the Alpine IVA-W200. I think it's got the best iPod integration available right now.
