So i just picked up a 1997 F250XL 2wd 7.3 turbo diesel with 220,000 on it for cheep. But the resin it was cheep is do to a starting problem that it has. first off let me say i have done a bunch of reading on "hard starting problems" (this is by far best info form i have come across) but i fell my issue is a little different then others. Do to my truck will start and run just fine all day with no idling or dieing out issues of any sort. there is no check engine light, the tack works at all times. With a long crank over the oil gauge will jump up like it should etc. But then when i shout it off and leave it for a few mines. When i come back and try to start it up it just turns over with no firing. i tried to use starter fl and it makes the truck fire for a 1/2sec but as soon as i let go of the key it dose not stay running. now when this happens i can leave the truck for about 2-3 hrs and come back to it and it will start up and run just fine? my first guess was the battery's so i put 2 red top optima in it. still didn't do the trick next i tried a new cam position sensor thinking the recall had not been done still not it. i don't want to just keep trying stuff with out telling my story because that could make my cheep truck a very expensive one fast!!!!! I'm new to diesels but do know gas engines well. I thank anyone for any info they may give me. the more inputs the better.

PS: the truck is bone stock with the exception of a K&N drop in replacement air filter

The most common problem with the "no start when warm" is bad Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR) o-rings. It could be something else, but I would try that first sice the o-ring kit is fairly cheap.

IPR O-Ring Kit (for when IPR valve replacement is not required)
(Ford) F6TZ-9C977-AA
(International) 1825806C92

Cheers!

so i have the fuel bowl out and was just wondering if there is anything else i should replace or check before i put it all back together? also i don't have to remove the HPOP to pull the IPR off of it right? and last question. Is there a special way to fill up the fuel bowl up after i get it all back together?

You may want to inspect (or just replace) the hoses from the fuel pump to the bowl. You don't need to remove the HPOP, but you may want to suck the oil out of the reservoir to avoid it coming out when pulling the IPR. Disconnect the connector, remove the tin nut holding the coil on the IPR and then use a deepwell 1-1/8" socket to remove the IPR body. The fuel bowl should fill right up by itself after trying to restart (I've never filled it). Cheers!

Thats a bummer. Its good to have your parts before you tear into a thing. If IPR o-rings don't do it, my guess would be a torn upper injector o-ring.

Also the CPS did you buy it from Ford or IH?
i get the CPS from ford. I know I should have waited but just got impatient and I had called ford before i started ripping in to it. now im going to clean out the fuel bowl really good. Also going to replace all the rubber fuel hoses. Is there a reason there is wire loom over the steel braided lines going to the HPOP? i feel it would look better without the loom on them.

OK so i get the o-ring kit in today and put my truck all back together. but instead of just adding the oil i lost by pulling out the IPR out. I'm going to change it. I have read that people say to use a newer year oil filter because they are bigger? is this a good idea and with my motor having 220,000 on it what oil and weight do you guys recommend i use?

I would just stay with the filter for your year (bigger is just more capacity which you don't need if you change the oil regularly) and since you're in Vegas I would use a 15W-40 (like Delo 400 or Rotella). Do fill the HPOP reservoir! Cheers!
