I love my 2000 Excursion PSD, and have been a diesel junkie for the last 4.5 years because of it. The issue is, while it is my toy...it is my wife's daily driver.

My daily driver is a 1997 F150 Ext. Cab 4.6L V8 which we've had since new as well. It currently has 97,000 miles on it, in EXCELLENT condition, and has been quite possibly the most trouble-free vehicle I've ever owned. HOWEVER, it is not a diesel! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I also have 3 kids in car seats so the extra room of a Crew Cab would be nice when I have them in my vehicle too (mostly we use the Excursion). Therefore, I have been thinking about selling it before it reaches 100K as the value is still pretty good on it.

So my question is this: If I could find a 96 or 97 Crew Cab 250/350 with 160-175K miles on it for around $2,500 difference...should I sell my F150 to get the PSD?

I know the PSD should theoretically last to at least 300K miles...if not 500K. I wouldn't expect the F150 to live past 150K without major repair expenses occurring...which is something I am afraid of happening (having a trouble-free car turn into a money pit).

Please post comments to this...I like receiving advice.

i had a buddy that just did this very thing...although he didn't have an excursion...but he had a 99 F150 ext cab just like yours with less than 100k miles on it...he barely got $7k for the truck...and a crew cab diesel is going for close to $15k still even with 180k miles on it. if he had already had an excursion then i don't think he would have bought the crew cab...cause now he wants an excursion as well...lol goodluck!

I guess you're expecting a biased response to your question, since you're asking a bunch of diesel junkies, right? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I voted to get the diesel for two reasons: I believe you'll remain "trouble free" longer, and the crewcab is hard to beat. You've got three in car seats, my youngest graduates from the University of Washington next weekend, so there's nobody living here except my wife, my dog, and I, and I still can't live without a crewcab.

It depends, on a lot of things, prepare for a rambling....

I've made this type of decision several times. I recently sold a 2001 focus which I'd intended to keep forever as my comuter car in favor of a '93 tbird which I purchased for $1500, has much cheaper insurance, and spelled the end of my car payments. I gets worse gas mileage, but you have to buy a lot of gas to make up for more expensive insurance and that car payment!

It's that type of thinking you need to do here.
Depending on where you live, the options and condition of your '97, it's likely you will NOT find a crew cab diesel to replace it for only $2500 more than you sell your 150 for. In some parts of the country a crew cab diesel 4x4 with over 125k starts at asking prices of over $17k. One friend of mine drove from Denver to Dallas to pick up a "camper special" '97 psd cc short box 4x4 and was VERY happy to have found it for under $14k, and he bought it through ebay, based on pictures and description.

Since you have the excursion already as your family hauler, do you really need a crew cab? The least expensive way to get a PSD truck is a regular cab, but that will only work for you if you ALWAYS take the kids in "moms school bus".

Hey, if it was up to me, we'd all have crew cab diesels, farmers would be growing diesel soy beans, and we'd be paying something like $0.50 a gallon for fuel....

Good luck with your decision. Perhaps you need to start by advertising your 150, and seeing if you can get close to what you think it's worth?

This poll sounds very familiar. I sold a dependable F-150 to get my '97 F-350 PSD and I never have regretted it.
