I have a 2000 F-350 Crew Cab, Long Bed, 4x4 and am only averaging 10 MPG. Friends that have similar trucks are averaging 15-16 MPG. What should I check to get better milage?
I have had the truck about 5 weeks now. It has 115,000 miles and is stock as far as I can tell. The tires are about 31" with no lift.
The truck seems to have plenty of power, drives and handles great, just poor MPG.
I recently towed a 16' box trailer weighing about 5500 lbs. The fuel milage then was about 7 MPG. It is killing me at the pump.
OK Lets start with basics. Somebody will probably be along soon with more experience with this type of problem.
When was the last time the truck was serviced (including air and fuel filter)?
Also, How do you drive it? Are you grandma or do you do 80 MPH everywhere? Not bagging on you, but the mileage on mine goes down significantly when I go over 2000 RPM's on the highway.
I know the oil was changed at the dealership before I bought it, but when the air, oir and other filters were changed I have no idea. I typically drive withing 5 mph(over) of the speed limit. I do not take off quick at lights. I am still getting used to driving this vehicle.
Could be a low boost issue, or an EGT problem. Gauges would tell you this.
Could be plugged/stuck exhaust back pressure gauge.
Could be a leaking/slipped intercooler boot.
Could be a chip that you dont know about.
Could be low fuel pressure or oil pressure.
Heck, thing may have a plugged up cat or muffler! Cut that thing out, dont need it anywayz.
As you can see, it "could be" a lot of things. Where are you located? Perhaps someone who is more used to a PSD can take a ride with you and tell you how your truck feels compared to a "good" truck?
Did you check to make sure the front hubs are unlocked? Even if they are in Auto(if it's ESOF), they could be locked. Try reaching behind the tires and turning the axle.

I was gonna ask the same question. Do you notice any "bumping" in the steering wheel when you turn sharp?
I do not have any quages other than the stock ones. I live in the Houston, TX area and would like to know if any can recommend a good Diesel mechanic to take a look at it.
Check out these guys DIESEL INNOVATIONS. They can hook you up with a set of gauges and also help you diagnose your fuel mileage problem.
Of course you'll probably be a little lighter in the wallet because of all of the other mods you'll want to do! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
If you have a buddy with a programmer get him to hook up and pull the codes for you . the dealer will charge $50-75 for it but it will save lots on not needed parts. Welcome to Powerstokes annonomous !!!!
