I have a friend that has a 2002 that on a spring or summer morning he has to wait appx 3 minutes or so before the glow plugs turn off. He said in the winter time that delay increases to 15 minutes. After that the truck runs fine. Also he said that he could plug it in and not have the problem at all. He has new glow plugs and relay in the truck. What would you guys check next? Also, would there be a need for glow plugs during this time of year? Here we only get down to mid to high 60's at night.

Any help is appreciated.

How does he know the GP's are being charged for 15min? The longest they ever stay charged is a little over 2 min and that's in the winter time. I would like to know how he knows they are being charged for this long. If they are staying charged for this long of period I would say it would be an issue with the computer.

Yep sounds they ain't working at all, follow the directions in the Hard start/no start thread at the top of this section, I bet you will find a bad GPR or some bad GPR'S, the poor running could just be the EBPV valve working.

I have better info since the last post. His truck starts right up and idles fine. It will not accelerate until it warms up, three to 15 minutes, then runs like a scalded dog. Depressing the pedal on a cold start is non-responsive until it warms up.

If it won't accelerate at all , it may bet the TPS.. If it accelerates slowly , It may be the EBPV ....

X2
Or something in the valve assembly.
Also check IAT and EOT to see if in range.

This is one of those things that after you repair and its working correctly it will start to leak!
