Hello Diesel Users,

I am looking to buy a truck and might possibly be getting a Ford Diesel soon. In fact this would be my first truck. I don't know too much about them though and I figured this would be the place to ask.

Truck in question is a 1991 F250 4x4 w/ 8' bed, 7.3 Diesel 4spd manual and extended cab. Milage is 191,000. Guy is asking $2800 for it.

Looked it over this morning, seems to run and drive fine. Doesn't sway to either side, runs smooth on highway speeds. Tires are good, new batteries, Injector pump and glow plugs done recently, along with having the fuel injectors cleaned out (has receipts though I didn't look at them).

The engine, though, has a slight coating of oil and dirt and it can be smelled burning as its driving. Just faintly. Its also damp with oil on the bottom. I asked about the special coolant and he never heard of it. Should I be worried about that?

The body is pretty decent. There is some rust along the wheel wells and on the back of the cab. The latter has an amateurish bondo job.

The rear diff. (which btw, is massive compared to what I'm used to) has a bit of dampness on it too on the rear seal though I didn't see any puddles forming.

Should I be worried about the coolant issue? Is there a way to check for damage? What about the oil leaks, do they sound normal or would I need to have that addressed?

Anything else I'm missing? Thanks for the help in advance!

Price sounds reasonable.... oily diesel good heavens yes... usually fixed with new valve cover or injection return lines..... see my post for armyboy.....

With that low a mileage I personally would not worry about coolant... but I would start with a new batch of coolant, tstat and SCAs if you buy the truck..... just to feel better.

How does it start........smoke at all after 2 minutes or during normal driving.

No smoke at all.

Radiator was changed recently, and although I'm not positive, the PO had someone else do it. Hence, the coolant should be pretty fresh.

191K is low milage? Thats reassuring.

Tailgate is one of those tube looking things that lets the air flow through. I'd like to replace it with either an original or better still, a lift gate. Any experience in those? Used ones go for not too much on ebay.

You sure it's a 4spd? I thought that the ZF-5 was the only manual offered after 1987....

Just my opinion, but I would much rather have the 5spd than the 4spd. It's good for a difference of as much as 5 mpg.

I traded a truck like that last fall when I bought my '02. Dealer gave me $2500 for it. If I wanted to take the time to sell it myself, I could probably have gotten around $4k for it, but I didn't want to wait. I think the dealer sold it recently for somewhere between $4-5k.

Its a 91 manual. I thought it was a 4spd, but I am not definite.
So I would imagine, if they only came with a ZF-5 5spd, then its probably that.

It has one of those, tube-grating tail gates on it. Which seems a little flimsy. I see some gate lifts (tommy lift) for sale on ebay and craigslist for maybe $200-300. How hard is that to add on the back? Can I still use the hitch with the gate in place?

One oil leak i did run into on only 80K on my Odometer was the oil pan. Now my truck sat for some time before i bought it from the last owner so it had time to eat away at it, but my oil pan was rusted prity good and the seal was bad. Not too sure how mechanically inclined ya are but that could be another cause of your oil leak. Its a pain in the *** to change, but its a doable job within a few hours with a good jack and some basic tools

I don't think its so much a leak as, perhaps, seepage (for lack of a better word)?

Would anyone be able to recommend a good, experienced and trusty mechanic who could look at this truck around Cherry Hill/Glassboro Area in southern NJ?

I love my 91', but I warn you that you will be spending some hours under the truck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I've learned a ton of info from the guys on TDS. Great group of guys in this 7.3L forum.

4x4, extended cab and 5-speed for $2800? Find someone to check it out for you and write that check.
