Well I was heading back to MA in the 04 today from Pennsylvania and got off in Jersey to get some fuel. Had to pull a u-turn and about mid-turn I thought the truck had shut off as I didn't have power steering. Truck was on and I was like great, I threw a belt. However, as soon as the truck would come off of idle I would gain PS back. I'm trying to narrow things down before I start tearing things apart, so here's the situation:

* At idle, no PS, no power brakes
* Above idle, PS gets easier as revs get higher. Power brakes follow suit.
* No leaks at hydro boost, nor at the pump. The top of the steering box is damp, no visible leaks.
* No crazy PS pump noise that you're used to hearing when a pump is on the way out.
* Finally, the PS pump is spinning at idle.

Any and all ideas would be appreciated so I can only have the truck down for a short time!

Thanks!

sounds like the ps pump is bad or check to see if the ps pulley is on tight. very possible that it could be spinning on the shaft.

Sounds like a bearing is about frozen, I would pull the belt and check the shaft out, it will probably feel like gravel in there.

Well, looks like it is indeed the pump, not positive yet though. I just pulled the old one out, my truck is an 04 with 78k on it and I pulled out a remanufactured PS pump... Looks like the previous owner already had a problem with the PS system.

Job's done, not terribly hard but I did need to move a bunch of stuff to get to it. Started it up, adjusted the fluid and coolant, and backed out of the driveway with power steering. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
