I developed a wine the other day , i have mushy brakes and really wines when pressed ,also does not turn well until idle is picked up ,but still has a wine , just wondering is the pump bad or hydroboost? Is it curable by flushing with synthetic atf ? I do have a extra pump i got for 40.00 , but if i can fix it without id be much happier , iv read about fluid in the hydroboost , can this be cleaned out somehow? thanx

I'm bringing this back to life.....

My truck has the exact same problem. As for the question Gofasterdammit asked....Yes except my noise isn't a grind, it's a whine. I've been reading all the power steering pump topics trying to gain knowledge and figure out what avenue to take. It seems to be all over the place though; from ball joints, flushing, gear box, bigger pump, stock pump, ram assist, nothing just deal with it, ect.... I don't have tons of money to dump into the problem. I'm hoping I can get it fixed the first time. Yes my truck is on 35's and has 100K miles on it now. It has gradually gotten worse over the last year.

i have the same problem. when turning it whines when steeping on the brakes it whines. the pedal is stiff with engine off as it should be but very slowly goes down with very hard pressure applied to it. as it whines when i get to the bottom of the pedal stroke it pulses. the master cyliner and hydroboost unit were out of the truck on a bench for quite some time. no leaks in brake system. i bled the **** out of it numerous time still has the same problems. new ps pump but still whines. abs maybe not bleeding properly (no air came out of any lines)? this is a nightmare. does anyone know where to get a chiltons manual on a 2001 f350 powerstroke not the crappy haynes.

Let me share my history with you all..
2004, F350, 35" tires,30K miles 2nd owner.
Stopped on dry pavement there is no way the wheels are turning L/R. High RPM or not. Garage floor or the dealership's painted shop floor no problem. Multiple dealers told me this is normal and is made even more noticable by larger tires and dual stabilizers. Of course "I needed ball joints etc." I replaced the entire front steering linkage, ball joints tie rods the works. Same problem. Went to a diesel repair shop and was told they could not duplicate the problem, (in their painted shop floor), but they did see a bit of metalic in the fluid and the hydroboost had a leak. I could see the leak so $1500 later with a new pump and hydroboost, if I am not rolling the wheels still will not turn, feel like I am about to rip the steering wheel off. Finally spoke to a friend of a friend and his '04 has the exact same problem and he was told by the dealership in his state that it is what it is and larger tires are not recommended.
Does anyone else have this problem?

My Hydroboost started leaking right after I put the lift on. I haven't taken anything apart but it looks like it's leaking at the fittings.

Sounds like your master cylinder is leaking internally.

Looking for input

With the truck parked, engine running, when you press on the brake pedal does it make a grinding noise and have a pulstaion that can be felt through the pedal?
You described my symptoms to a "T". I had a brief episode that lasted a minute three weeks ago that went away. It returned this morning coming into work. I will tear into it tomorrow. Reading the posts hear it sounds like it might be the hydroboost. There is plenty of power steering fluid. I had the water pump replaced after it seized up a month ago. I stopped it before it had a chance to overheat. Any thoughts on it would be appreciated.
Brian

I need to set up the signature still but the truck is a late 99 F350 7.3L Diesel "Centurion" otherwise stock with just the radiator hose mod. and a K&N filter. 130,000 miles with normal maint./rear ABS censor/CPS replaced (several times).
