Yes, there is a fix,
It requires replacement of 3 pieces of plastic, that act as a clutch.
The cylinder shaped plastic pieces break, before the motor or linkage breaks.
Mine wore over a period of time, imagine that.
Search the archive for part numbers, but start by removing the door liner, and searching for 3 dimples in the door sheet metal.
By drilling out the dimples it allow easy removal of the motor/clutch assembly.

Other will fill in details.
Replacement plastic parts are worth a nickel or a dime, I was ripped off, by having to pay for a re-build kit, about $30. I used the plastic cylinders, thru the rest in a scrap bucket.

Easy to do
Go for it

Just after I paid for rebuilt motor units, I found the FORD repair kits on eBay for $12.00 each. I now have 2 repair kits for when the rebuilt units go belly up. I'm not sure where they are, hopefully in the 'truck box'. But here is what I have in my 'Library' on the dimples.
A little trick to ease motor replacement I have found rather than grinding off the rivets and removing the whole regulator assembly.
Look very closely on the door in the area of the motor and you will see three tiny DIMPLES/center punch marks, one over each bolt that holds the motor to the regulator. Drill through each one with a 1/2" drill bit and you will be able to fit a 1/4" drive 8mm socket through each hole to remove the three bolts holding the motor to the regulator assembly. This is the only way I do it, it saves a lot of time and hassles with grinding the rivets and possibly damaging the door around the rivet holes.
The motor has plastic (I think nylon) rollers inside the head, you can get a head kit from Ford.

Drilling holes where the dimples are is the fastest/easiest way. I drilled the holes at home, took the socket and a long reach magnet with me to the parts store and replaced the motor right there in the lot just in case there was something wrong with the "NEW" one. Took about 10 minutes. I had to do both sides at $67.00 each here in Baja NAPA Store. Don't let them try to sell you the expensive ones at $125.00 ea. BajaGringo

I took your advice last time my power window motor died. The dealer DID NOT take you advice on the passenger side the year before... mangled my door. I was picking out metal shavings from my door upholstery for months. Ticked me off something terrible.

Drilling the dimples made the job SIMPLE!!! almost even a pleasure to do!
