Not sure if this is the right place to ask a question or not,but here goes...'97PS,212,000miles, never had a problem with truck.Have alway kept oil and filters changed(Dello400) Started getting a little hard to crank (start)first time in the mornings about 10,000 miles ago,I live in Texas and our winters are pretty mild.Noticed I was losing a little power and truck sounded like it had a solid miss at idle.Had local mechanic check it out and problems seemed to point to #2 injector.I pulled all injectors on drivers side bank of engine and replaced #2 injector with new Allied injector. At the same time I cleaned tips of the other three inj.with 00 steelwool and carb cleaner. Also I replaced all o rings on the 3 injectors I cleaned of course.Truck started right up and sounded good and smooth. Also I should mention that before doing described work the truck would run smooth and strong until fluids would come up to operating temps, then the miss and loss of power would show up.(oil pressure remains good according to gauge)
O K back to truck after repairs. I changed oil and filter as well as the fuel filter and truck performed as new for maybe 600-800 miles. Then one day at lunch I stepped out of truck and noticed slight smoke coming out of exhaust at idle and a pretty strong smell of burning rich.I returned to work about 5 miles away and noticed same symptoms but was not alarmed. On the way home from work later that evening when I was about 1/4 to 1/2 mile from home something let go and it started to smoke like you wouldn't believe! Engine was clattering like noise when first started on a cold morning.Engine ran for no more than 30 seconds total after this occured.Have not attempted to start it since.Took top of fuel filter canister off to check for contamination and don't believe the cannister was full,if that means anything or not.
Well there you have it,and again I,m not sure if this is the right place to ask questions or not but hope it is!
Any help or thoughts on this matter is greatly appreciated!
Could it be an injector was not seated in the bore good and has become loose?

That sounds like classic IPR O-Rings symptoms.
The other could be a weak fuel pump.

That sounds exactly like one of the injectors came out of the bore a bit and is dumping fuel down the hole. the problem is that the hpop oil rail and fuel rail loose so much pressure that it affects all the other cylinders. you might get a mile or so then it's dead.

I've done it once, got the long and short hold down bolts mixed up. sounds like it came apart internally, but it is just fuel knock badly out of time (pouring in fuel).

it'l probably be ok, just reseat all the injectors and whichever one moves, re-oring it- or at least tighten it down and restart it (after purging cylinder by removing glow plug) to see if it runs better.

OK, just ran out in this 100 deg. weather after working in it all day and removed driver's side v/c to look at injectors. Everything looked in order by just an external visual.I tried to move or twist each injector with all power I could muster with just my hands and everything appears to be tight! Is this the practical way I should be checking to see if an injector had backed out of bore? Is there something else I should check? Should I remove injectors? Am I asking dumb questions?Any help recieved is greatly appreciated as I have always worked on gas engines this diesel stuff is pretty foreign to me but believe I'm capeable if pointed in right direction
Thanks..bowser

I'd tap on them with a dead blow hammer or a soft mallet to see if they seat down..or get a long straight edge across the top of the inj solenoids to see if any are higher. might be the other side too...

maybe you cut an o-ring..have you tried to restart it?

if the cylinders are full of fuel, then glow plug removal and careful cranking of the engine might reveal the problem child.

WARNING. glow plug hole fluid evacution will come out hard, cover and BOLT down v/c with a couple of bolts, or at least stand the hell out of the way. bump the solenoid on the fender, don't try to actually start it when purging cylinders.

you could try unplugging pairs of injectors or even singles at the inside or outside electrical connections in an attempt to find the noisy one. at the very least, try to find out which side the noise is on.

Thanks for your imput! Have gently tapped on all four injector solenoids and all seem to be tight. Tapping with dead-blow hammer makes same pitch of "clunking" noise from each one.Could changing one injector and replacing all o-rings on one bank of engine put added stress or pressure on other injectors that have never even been loosened in their bores??Or is this just a long shot? Remember this pick up has over 200,000 miles on it,all put on by me.Easily the best, most trouble-free vehicle I've ever owned! Like it so much that I also bought a new one in 2002 just like it.The 2002 is a good truck as well (67000 mi.)but to tell you te truth I don't believe it can hold a candle to my ol' reliable '97! Thanks again for any information! Plus I would really like to repair myself as opposed to taking to the dealer and listen to them tell me that it is probly worn out. This pick up ran as good as it did the first I bought it until this problem reared it's ugly head. Also am not opposed to buying 8 new injectors as I realize nothing last forever but would like to pin point this down as being my problem before spending that kind of scratch!
Thanks
Also forgot to add that I did place good metal straight edge on top of solenoids and all were equally in bore. (driver's side only)

I think you would be seeing some fluids in the wrong place, ie coolant in oil, oil in fuel, but what would happen if one of the old copper gaskets were left in the injector cup or on one of the injectors? I doubt it would run 800 miles but I'm not sure either. If I had the cover off anyway I would pull the injectors out and look them over.
