Re: Pre pump/in take modifitcation... who's done it
Lots of people have done it, the in tank mod. If you do that mod in combination with the regulated return you really do need a good, very good pre-pump filter and water separator. Putting the regulated return on the system routes almost all the fuel through the heads instead of almost all of the fuel going to the return before it goes to the heads. Two things happen, the fuel overall is heated up and the fuel flow through the stock 2 micron fuel filter is much greater. The stock fuel filter is still a good filter at that flow rate, but I don't think that it is a good water separator. It is a crappy water separator in the first place almost useless as a water seperator at those higher flow rates. I have a Dahl 100 pre-pump filter with a 2 micron element that is an excellent water separator at that flow rate also. These mods were the forum major topic in 2001 & 2002 so most of those with those early models have already done the mods. IMO the mods are good ones, just need to do all of them. Or, just the tank mods with a pre-pump filter. I went with the in-tank mods, or "Hutch" mod, then the Dahl, then the regulated return, then a cooler for my return fuel line. Brass vs stainless, well that also was a topic of disagreement a few years ago, mostly about the brass ferrule not gripping on the stainless tubing. Bunk, I have both. Stainless on the suction side and brass on the return extension, both are tight four years later, I dropped my tank to clean it recently, so I don't think it really makes any difference on the fittings. One thing that you should not do, IMO, if you fabricated your own return extension in tank is use a brake line. They are ususlly a galvanized coated tube, diesel fuel releases the zinc into solution and that is not good for injectors, some made that mistake when these mods were the new thing a few years ago. Me since I was bypassing my SS fuel line to the pump for the Dahl line I just used a section of the stock exterior fuel line inside my tank for an extension. Sounds like you will be having some fun with it. Good luck, 106
