I recently had some repairs done and the mechanic did not clean up the fuel that dripped onto the top of the manifold, question is, is there anything I should be aware of before I wash of the diesel fuel from the engine. Can glow plugs be damaged ?

Thanx

I was the crap out of all diesel engines, I do try to take a bit more care with the electronic ones. The key is to not do it hot. The other thing is not to do it running. The reason is that the fuel injection pump has very close clearances. When it gets up to operating temps on its own, all the parts reamain relatively the same temp. thus the clearances stay in check. If you put cold water on the pump, the housing shrinks and siezes the pump. I usually blow the water out of the wells where the gp's are. You can also use a can of non flammable electric motor cleaner to clean it up.

The way I wash my engine and compartment is to drive it a mile or two to the local do-it-yourself carwash, getting the engine warm, but not too hot as garbage mechanic suggests. Then, just start dropping quarters into the machine. Wait until the water gets warm. Then just wash and rinse, repeat if necessary. Just keep the direct spray from the electronics and just dust the injection pump. My IP stays clean so I don't have to worry about that. I pretty much concentrate on the sides of the block and the bottom. Once I fix the oil leaks, I won't need to wash it but once a year. Tim
