ok, im building/restoring a 1984 f-250 4x2 ext cab long box. ill keep adding to this as i get farther down the road.
to get you up to speed bought the truck with a bad 6.9 in it for 400$ it had rusty jones rust proffing at one time and it faired the wisconsin salt good for its age. the license was last registered in 98. took off the cap cleaned it up and ripped out the motor trans and driveshaft 1984
bought two other junk trucks, a 6.9 with good fender and an ok box and a 7.3 idi that ran...after hours of little things... 400 for both
next i tackled the back end of the 84 and after montains dusty dibris it started to look alot better 84 back...
farther next was angle grinder with a wire wheel, she cleaned up so nice frame i stripped the leaf packs out of the other 6.9 and began the cleaning and restacking of them leafs

then for those of you who just want to see the final result so far behold...... so far this is the rear half of the truck with new leaf spring bushings, all new bushing bolts, new pinion, axle, diff cover seals, new brake hardware, vavoline synthetic fluid, new u bolts, and POR-15 over almost ever square inch.

since the photo i have dropped the front tank and removed the fuel lines and welded the nuts (that hold the gas tank straps in place) to the cross member because next time i work on it i will not have to hold a wrench up there and have it slip off and so on. so i have a few more things to por-15 but she is coming along nicley. i will keep posting here and there because i have already started up front a little.

i have every single reciept (sp)? so in the end i will no the cost of it all /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yeah, it'll feel like it takes forever, but if you do things right the first time you'll be very happy in the end. I've been working on mine for almost a year now, it's finally been down the road a few times, I'm just trying to work the bugs out now. It seems like it'll be a nice ride once the few issues I'm having are solved.

I have no pics yet, I have no digital camera. The front end looks pretty good, everything behind the fenders and hood is pretty much the same from 1980-1996 so it matches up as factory intended. I had some problems getting the fender-door gaps right but I think that's my problem. None of the trucks I have seen have the right gap between the A-post and upper-rear corner of the fender either. I had to make my own bumper brackets so I got to tighten up the gap between the bottom of the bumper filler and the top of the bumper, it looks alot nicer than some of the factory trucks I've seen with about a 1.5" gap there.

It's pretty much a straight forward swap to change the parts, other than the bottom rear fender mount. The only real problem I had is that the fan shroud was rubbing the top of the fan, so I made some 1" shims to go under the core support mounts to raise the radiator and shroud up to center the fan in it, but in retrospect this was a bad idea. When adjusting the hood latch to make it pull the hood to the right level to be flat with the fenders, the bottom of the hood hits the core support, so my hood ended up maybe 1/8" above the fenders at the front corner. I keep telling myself that they'll never see it when I blow by them at 70mph. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif In hindsight I should have figured out how to move just the radiator up in its brackets somehow.

Andrew,

I'm in the middle of a makeover on my '86 f-250 4x4 right now and I used POR-15 on the frame and suspension also. Did you use the chassis black over top of the rust paint? I did and it looks better then new. I too had a ton of time with the wire wheel. Well worth it though. The cab is being painted this week. I can't wait.

That sounds just like my project. The one that my wife calls that damn truck.

If you are in need of a completely rebuilt C6, new bands, clutches, pump, torque convertor, servo piston, everything--let me know. I'm swapping a 4 speed into it soon.

fm- i havent heard about chassis black?? just a paint on top of the por-15?

fl- the main reason i bought the parts trucks is because the 7.3 had a rebuilt tranny and t case both done by our good family friend who worked for ford and now hucksdorf i beleive they might be a sponser on here now... but anyway not to dissapoint you all but it may not get the 6.9 back in. looking to make it an 800 horse monster /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif but until i know for sure it is going to get finished.

others who are doing this: how long do you have in the project and money?
thanks

Don't ever ask that question. If you don't know for sure, then you don't have to lie to your CFO.

I've got an '84 that I've been s-l-o-w-l-y working on over the years. I travel quite a bit for work so I have to get my time in when I can.

I suppose it was 4 years ago when I started ripping into it. I actually got it on the road last year for the first time after being down for 3 years. I can't comment on the cost. The way I look at it is I've paid way less than a new truck payment and for me I really enjoy working on it.

The list of items I have done are:

stripped all parts off to the chassis...including axles and leaves.
sandblasted
primed
herculined
sandblasted rear axle
primed
herculined
new poly bushings in leaves
replaced d50 front with d60
have yet to sandblast, prime, and herculine
new (from the bone yard) cab, front clip, box
cab floor sandblasted
primed
herculined.
new motor through navistar (cheaper than the Ford dealer)
Banks sidwinder kit
custom PSD intercooler
Catco 12" clutch
Custom Autometer instrument cluster
Dodge bucket seats from a '98 dodge
custom fuel and brake line
B&W Turnover ball fifth wheel
new rear drums and brakes
new injectors
rebuilt ip
Upgraded to newer style battery boxes
Upgraded to newer style master cylinder
new booster
new poly cab bushings

It seems to me there's some other things too, but I can't think of them.

I would do it all over again...even with a list of headaches I wont go into right now.

I've got a lot left to do...quite honestly I think my rig looks like hell. But when I'm driving around I get more smiles and thumbs up than you can imagine. To me all other things aside that makes it worthwhile in and of itself.

You've got a great project going there. I would have used POR15 instead of the herculiner if I could start over. I'm anxious to see some pictures when you get around to it.

If you need some moral support drop me a line. I've been there my friend.

Paul

Lots of people use photobucket for pics/videos.
I am a member of FTE also, so I get to have my own photo album.
