My 01 is in need of a new power steering pump. I have read about the pitfalls of the stock pump, issues with the AGR pump and praises on the PSC pump. Most the the info and conversations I am reading on the PSC pump are a decade or older. Has anyone come up with a better mouse trap in the last ten years for the 7.3?

I would say a Redhead steering box. They have a straight reman version, or the beefed up version is only about $100 more. I would say most people get the beefed up version. RiffRaff, CNC Fab (I think), 1023 Diesel all sell the Redhead box. I have one and it is stronger than stock. PSC stuff is expensive.

If you have big tires and a big wallet you could look at PSC full kit with Hydro assist. However, you can also get a Redhead and send to West Texas Offroad for the "redneck ram" hydro assist for less money and most say it is a better system anyways. I have no experience with hydro assist, but I have been researching it because I think it is something I want.

Make sure you do plenty of research before even thinking of redhead.
There's bluetop as well.

His post reads to me that he is looking for pump, not a box.

But a good box makes the difference.

You will want a larger cooler if you install a psc pump to help with the Heat of higher pressure.

A larger output pump won’t make a difference on an oem steering box.

I've had both the Redhead steering box and hydro assist on my trucks. The Redhead steering box is something I will have on ANY Ford truck I ever have now. The amount of play it takes out is great. I also have a steering box that is tapped for hydro assist. Redhead was easy to work with with rebuilding it. The hydro assist was on one of my superduty's with 37" tires and steered great. The box is now on my Excursion without the hydro assist and stock size tires.

Thanks for the info on the steering box and ram but I need a new PUMP right now. This is a daily driver with one inch over stock on the tires (height & width) I'm looking for reliability over the stock. Need suggestions on a new pump, the ram and steering box might come next. What pump do you use to run the ram and make that redhead work flawlessly?

Check out the re-manufactured pumps on Rockauto and other sites. A few have Motorcraft pumps as well. I also would not shy away from a few of the other brands. All of my pumps were stock and filled with Synthetic ATF. The only other change I made to the system was when replacing the power steering hose going from the pump to the hydroboost unit. I had a hose made with a larger bore when I needed to replace it.

Correct me if I'm wrong. For the most bang for my buck. I should find a quality stock pump, have my steering box upgraded, install a cooler and add a Ram.

How does the rebuild of the steering box compare between West Texas Offroad, Blue-Top Steering and Redhead?

Is there anything I need to do at the brakes for the above setup to work properly?

I wouldn't worry about the ram assist.
I'm on 35's and have No issues. And I need to flush my fluid.
Just go to Google and search about each box. Me personally, I won't buy a redhead.
May be fine for you though.
For the pump, I would go over stock. Psc, agr, etc.

The ram in my picture above came from westtexasoffroad and they also tapped my steering box a couple years before I had redhead rebuild it. Both vendors were good to work with. They recommend a 1.5" ram for 37" tires and above. These trucks do not need it for smaller than that.

That being said, I got really use to the feel of having hydraulic assist on my steering. I've considered running a smaller 1" or 1.25" ram assist on my Excursion with stock size tires.

For the pump ill stick with oem. I had a good talk with Ryan the owner of blue top and he does not recommend the higher pressure pump at all. Rest of the system is not build for that pressure and will be hard on the seal. And as Blue99stroker mentioned the heat is also An "issue" with higher pressure
