Hey Folks,
My 97HD is acting weird all of a sudden...
When it is cold it starts OK and idles fine. Long as I don't drive it.
Then after a few minutes warm up, I drive away its ok until it starts running rough losing rpm with Blue smoke pouring out of the exhaust. While it is going thur this phase it starts running like it is on 3 cylinders. I try and give it more throttle and it comes up roughly and then there is no throttle control at all roughly loses rpm until it dies. I wait a second or two and it starts right up but runs very rough pouring blue smoke with no throttle response at all!!! Almost like it is running out of fuel...
This continues for about 5 mins then it starts clearing up and smooths out and the way I go..

What gives???

Thanks in advance and hope everyone had a Great Thanksgiving!!

My bet is that will help....

You may want to test fuel pressure,,, Check or replace the fuel filter , make sure to drain the bowl (water)....

Hmm..Why would it all of a sudden start doing this???
I always do fuel filter with oil change about every 5k. Also drain and check water about every 1k..

This is just a condition I have never experienced before...

Any other Ideas???

Read what it says about the LPOP.. he adds "poor maint" to the statement , I think it has more to do with oil visc... ....

Well I read the whole page. None of those conditions are what I am experiencing. Truck has been maintained and I have no leaks visible that is....

I never have a long cranking problem or starting problem.
This condition I have is after the cold start right before it is fully warmed up. It starts to run rough and loses throttle response all the while blowing heavy smoke then stalls. Once stalls it starts back up but runs like it is on 3 cyl..rough as a cobb. You try and give it throttle and it slowly comes up then falls back down losing rpm. Like it is running out of fuel. After a few minutes it finally cleans up and purrs like a kitten again.

Next Idea???

btw..thanks for all the input

Check your oil. Is it low ? Also , after it stalls , check your oil , are there alot of air bubbles ? Sounds like your running out of oil . I had the same problem not to long ago , starts fine , drive up the road about a half mile and it would start to run like crap, stall, restart (hard), no response , eventually run better as engine heated up . My problem was low oil , cold temps. Shame on me .

Definitely sounds like HPO problem. With a cold engine, the oil is too thick to travel smoothly so I'd bet on the oil.

A very stupid question (please don't be mad for my asking) but I gotta ask: what's your oil level? If it's too low, you will experience just the symptoms you described. Don't ask me how I know. And don't ever lend your truck to a friend. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Well, It might have been oil related. Just weird to me....
I changed the oil, new oil filter and now it seems to be gone. ...knock on wood! It has been pretty chilly out also.
This truck has been a great truck!!!
Will post if it acts up again...

Thanks..Everyone that has posted..You all are great here on the DieselStop!!!
