I did a search and didn't find any posts that answered my question...

What is the purpose of the aic/why would I want one?

I suppose it is some sort of automatic throttle.

Thanks a lot

in the winter you turn up idle for faster warm up, in the summer the ac will work better with the higher idle that is if you leave your truck running for any length of time. also they say at extended idle the fuel doesnt burn completly.
thats my 2 cents worth.
for what its worth.

people run aftermarket items like compressors, D/C to A/C converters that require extra rpm. But don't idle extended periods (more than about 10-15 min.) at 700 rpm (stock), use an AIC to increase to 1-1.2k rpm for efficient fuel burn. Otherwise you'll get wetstacking, basically unburnt fuel on cylinder walls that removes oil and is detrimental to rings, etc.

Hey Hud... the AIC Unit serves a few purposes... while idling when cold... most diesels don't make the heat needed to seat the rings full time... so the AIC actually speeds up the engine RPM on cold days... what this does is gets the rings warm and seat properlay in cold conditions over a long duration idle... preventing a condition called "wet stacking". Wet Stacking occurs when a diesel idles long enough where the rings do not seat and causes diesel fuel to seep by the rings.. to some it is known as "washing" the rings/bearings... when the RPM's are elevated.. it warms the block. seating the rings.. even in cold conditions... and allows for full combustion of the fuel. As well... for some with winches.. or heavy auxillary packages.. the "charge protect" mode allows to control the alterinator charge system... for winching and other power applied applications. Overall.. I have found the AIC to be most useful... a pleasure to have and a wonder to do wihtout. Just my 2 cents..

James..
