hello

i was wondering i found a 95 7.3 for 5grand and i havent got to go look at it yet but i was wondering how much is a rebuild kit run for a 7.3 ? and how much i could expect in labor to have the motor work done ?

the truck has 275k miles i was thinking of getting it and paying to have it rebuilt and that way i would have a fresh low millage truck(mechanical wise) to drive IF its reasonable

Tough question to answer. Guesstimate about 4 to 8 grand.

Keep looking for a used motor. $5K for a used motor is nuts! No reason why you shouldn't be able to find one for around $2500. What state are you in?
I think he was talking about the whole truck, which might not be too bad, although I know of some (whole trucks) of that vintage that have sold for less.

To answer the question about a rebuild kit, Powerstrokeshop sells rebuild kits for just under a grand. Injectors (which should be replaced/rebuilt at 275k miles) would be extra.

I just bought a "The Works" rebuild kit directly from International for a 99 F-450 and it was $1375.00 in central Oregon. It was fairly complete, but I was frustrated by how many seals and gaskets were missing. Buying those cost several hundred dollars more. Still. overall, it was a pretty good deal.

I'm getting near the $3000-$3500 for parts and machine work. Doing the assembly work myself and finding the odd ebay deal. Its the small parts that will nickle and dime you to death. I wouldn't even want to think about what labor would cost to have someone do the R&I.

My total cost for rebuild ended up being $3,200.00. I also sprang 89.00 bucks for a new 2000lb engine stand at Harbor Freight and about 70.00 for a transmission jack rather than renting one. Any excuse for new tools is good! You'll run into a few needs for specialty tools as well. Harbor Freight had some and I made friends with a local deisel mechanic and gleaned a few tool loans there. This site is invaluable for help through the tough spots. I paid to have the rear main seal set as the tool is very expensive and the repair is a buggar if it's not right. Out of the truck that cost me 42.00 to have done. I had the part.

The rear main seal i bought for my IDI came with a tool for installation. Its just a plastic hub that pulls the seal/wear sleeve on with the flywheel bolts. It worked well to get the PSD wear ring started but it was the wrong bolt pattern so I just hit the tool with a dead blow hammer as far as i could go and then got the rest of the way with a chunk of 1" maple dowel. I had to separate the wear sleeve from the seal in this operation. Once the sleeve was on, I coated the flange of the seal with the wacker t-95 and carefully slipped the seal over the wear sleeve and bolted it down.
