Just got my first oil change today at the dealership. I asked them what kind of oil they put in, and the mech said 15W-40W. I said good, because I use Rotella 15W-40W in my farm tractor, and also used it in my last two Dodge w/Cummings engines. He then told me that I shouldn't use Rotella because it foams and causes the injectors to "dry fire" and damages them. Hmmmm??? Has anybody else ever heard that or is it basically a bunch of hogwash? No intention of starting oil wars, this is just my first Powerstroke and I'd like it to be a positive experience.

Rotella will do just fine. I've read that the Motorcraft oil does have a lot of anti-foaming additive in it and maybe that's what they're referring to. As long as you don't overfill you're not going to have any problems with the Rotella.

Thanks for the responses. I figured it was bunk.

Not quite as bad as my former Dodge dealer telling me they were waiting for the bearing stretcher to come in so they could finish working on my truck. I told them I had one they could borrow. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

I will throw my 2 cents worth in here.. I am a firm believer in using the Motorcraft oil. I just got my 06 f350 in January and changed the oil in Feb and used the Motorcraft. Now this is why I use it. I previously had a 96 7.3 and used Rotella in it and it ran fine but always seemed like just not quite right. I then talked to a couple factory people and they suggested I try Motorcraft which I did and it made a remarkable difference, The engine idled a lot smoother and actually was smoother throught the whole rpm range, Yes it does have more Anti-Foam agent in it and the injectors need that. They fire by compressed oil and if the oil is foamy they do not fire correctly. Your oil can foam just from being put under pressure, just not from overfilling it. You can get the Motorcraft at Wally world and it is fairly inexpensive...

Dewser-

Thanks for the input. Maybe the other applications I've been using Rotella in aren't as sensitive to foaming, or maybe not under the same pressure. I think I'll do a little more research on it. Do you use 15w-40w?

Yuppers thats all I have ever used is the 15W40 . I also tried delo in my earlier stroker and it wouldn't even idle hardly after an interstate run, I will always use Motorcraft 15w40 as long as I am drivin the Ford. I love my new truck have just over 6k on it now and it has been trouble free .. Not really impressed by milage though, but I guess for as big of a truck as it is I shouldn't complain. I hand calculate it all and have a spreadsheet built and my all around average is right at 14 mpg.. Good luck in your oil choice

Can Motorcraft be purchased anywhere other than a Ford dealer? I'm still in the hunt for a good motor oil. For the first year I had my dealer do all my oil changes. Then I figured why am I paying them to do something as easy as that. Since then I have tried Esso and Rotella and am not impressed. Things just seemed to run a lot smoother with the Motorcraft.

Could be related to our climate here. For example, woke up this morning to 0C and they're expecting a high of 20C. Quite a variation in temps throughout the year.

I have advice for how to choose the proper oil for your 6.0L Diesel.

Go to wal-mart, pep-boys, or wherever you get your oil

Take the truck manual, and verify what it says to use, i believe its CI-4+ or something.

Go through the shelves and grab ALL of the oils that have this rating.

Set them on the floor in a circle, spaced 6" apart for best results, alphabetically by manufacturer, then by shipping origin

Close your eyes, spin around clockwise 6.x times with your left arm and index finger extended.

Now, when you come to a stop, take careful note of which bottle of oil you are pointing at, as this is PRECISELY the oil that must be used in your vehicle.

Failure to follow the above guideline in sequential order will likely void your warranty.

Just FYI, i did this twice, and got TWO DIFFERENT oils...not knowing what to use, i tried it, lo and behold, it also ran with the new oil, with absolutely no difference.

If you change your oil per the manual schedule, the oil debates are null and void, pick your favorite colored bottle and put it in...its all the same to the 6.0L.

Nice but not quite. I'm on my third brand of oil over the 2 years I've owned the truck and each has made it behave differently.

Wondering 2 things:
Can Motorcraft be purchased anywhere other than a Ford dealer?
Does dino come in CI4+ or just CI4.

Oh .......... I can't go there.

I can tell you my truck runs smoother, starts better in hot& cold weather, and get good Blackstone reports. After going to Rotella syn. CI-4+. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

You can use your way, all I will say is I saw a difference.

I used Rotella in my 91 for 13 years w/o a problem and I am on my 3rd rotella change in the '05 and nary a problem. I use it mainly because, in the 90s it was hard to find in quantity but Sam's club had it by the case. Still buy it there. Around $40 for 6 gallons. It is on its last 500 miles of a 4000 mile change schedule and it ran 15 miles the other day at 90+ and it didn't falter. Can't be much foaming.

I saw Motocraft (Ford)oil at Walmart today.....15W-40W CI+4. They were out of it in the gallon bottles, but it was $2.09 in quart bottles. They also had Motocraft oil filters for a shade under $10. The box said for Powerstroke diesel, but it didn't say 6.0 or 7.3.

I've run both Rotella and motorcraft in my 2003 6.0L. Depending on whether I did the oil change or my Ford Dealer did the change. Because I was in so much for other service on the 2003, my dealer gave me a few "Comp" oil chages for the troubles I was having.

15-40w in the warmer weather and we'd drop to 10-30 in the colder weather. My 2003 ran a lot better in the winter using 10-30.

My 2003 truck developed oil drips when I tried Synthetic. Went back to Dino oil and the drips went away.

Are you sure it's 6 times around and not 5 ? I want to be sure I get it right now.

I have used them all in my trucks, pickups, cars, and heavy equipment over thae last 35 years in buisness. I am more concerned about my engines, some of which cost close to $30,000 to replace, than I am about a few dollars diferance in oil price. I always try to use the best I can, and as long as it is rated for your engine, all name brands will work fine. Right now, I am using Rotella, as my supplier was out of barrels of Mobile Delvac at the time, which is what I used the last 5 or 6 years. Pick a brand and swear by it, or swear at it, just change it when it needs to be.

By the way, there are only (5) major oil companies left in the world today, and Ford is not one of them. Just like all thier motorcraft filters, someone else makes it for them, and that manufacturer may change from year to year depending on cost and contract.

60,000 plus on my truck now.

Have only used Rotella 15W40 or 5W30.

No problems at all running this oil.

Right now using Rotella 15W40 in my Suzuki King Quad 700 ATV.

People may swear that the Seat-O-meter shows a huge improvment with a certian type of oil, but the truth comes from dyno testing. Anyone done that with different oils other than me?

I ran a Dyno while running Dino (that's a good one!). I then switched to Synthetic Rotello...same weight. Ran another Dyno. Almost identicle results. Throttle response was the same...0-60 was the same...cold start cranks were a bit better, but I think that was due to slightly warmer outside temps...maybe...maybe not. MPG did not change a bit.

There is a phenomona that makes a person think his truck runs better when he spends money on an expensive product he considers to be an upgrade due to outstanding markleting teams working for the manufacturer. That's called perception.

Anyone else run dynos on the different types of oils? I'd love to be wrong about this. But I need some hard numbers to convince me.

I will use Synthetics from now on, but not for performance. I am more interested in longevity of all the moving parts.

Nate
