I have an offer to buy my truck at my asking price. The offer came via email and the prospective buyer says he will pay with a cashiers check. I've received bogus (i.e. scam) offers in te past. This offser feels off to me for some reason even though I can't positively identify it as a scam.

What is the best way to protect myself here? Should I request that the buyer wire money into my account?

Thanks for any suggestions.

i've had the same problem before i actually got a cashiers check from wells fargo bank and it was fake. if i were you i would either let his bank and your bank do a wire transfer or keep full coverage on the truck and keep the title until the check cleared the bank and make sure he knows that if the check is bad your sending the police after his ass for stealing your truck. i would also get a notorized bill of sale and make him sign it and include his address and get a copy of his drivers license. you can never to sure nowadays without cash. good luck.

Thanks for the tips. It's a shame to have to be so suspicious, but that's just the way it is. I sent the guy a polite email telling him no disrespect intended but I had to know more about who he is, where he's from, etc. before I'd agree to sell the truck to him. Unless he's part of the witness protection program, I don't expect he should have a problem with that.

Cashiers checks can be stopped just like regular ones. Also it could be fake. I'd insist on cash or a bona fide wire transfer.

Good luck........

Sell it to him in the bank parking lot. Once the bank verifies the check is good, then give him the truck. Banks will even hold a high dollar cashiers check a week b4 releasing the funds. Be careful.

That could be anyones email. OSRAM could have a hundred identities on the net. Really if he wants it shipped, tell him you will arrange shipping for him AFTER the check clears the bank. YOU WILL NOT let him have it untill you are sure the money is deposited.
Also if you can not talk to him then that is most likely exactly what this is,, a scam.

Anyone look at Ebay motors? There are Harley Fatboys on there 03s for say 7,000.00 Buy it now,, (BUT NOT THE LEGITIMATE buy it now for ebay,,just a note down in the listing,,) I have asked about a couple of these,, emailed one guy thru ebays "Contact seller" got an email back, YES you can buy this harley now for 7,000. and FREE SHIPPING!! HOW NICE! Wire me the money thru such and such money "ESCROW" service. They are NOT supposed to release the money untill your happy with the bike and release it. THEY do not hold anything. EBAY DOES have an escrow account company, but they wont let you use that one, they already have an account set up with this "Legitimate" company.
Also I told them, I will drive to NY to pick up the bike,, and pay cash, no sorry I am currently out of the country on business, and can not meet you.
SCAM SCAM SCAM!! MAN I hate the world we live in now sometimes!!!

Sorry to rant,, and get off topic,, but I would be very cautious about this,, persue it but be carefull.. ok?
