Question about the history of the Super Duty...

When did Ford start using the "Super Duty" name to define these trucks? I have always believed that it was the 1999 model year. Did they use the Super Duty name for some previous OBS models? There is a YouTuber that is calling his OBS truck out to be a Super Duty when talking about it.

Back in the OBS years they Ford didn't have a F450 but that model was called a Super Duty, I believe.

Well then, if correct, one of his trucks, a dually service truck might be that. I'll have to look next visit to the site. I did some Google searches and was not able to find anything that used the Super Duty name other than the '99 and up MYs.

(edited: appearantly...the "Super Duty" moniker has been used several times over the decades; 1958, 1988, & 1999-present)
Just to throw another name in, in 97 Ford offered a light duty F250 so all the heavy duty F250's and F350's with a 7.3 in them were branded "Heavy Duty" on the tailgate if I remember right.

Yes, I've brought this up a couple of times. I learned about this piece of Ford wisdom the hard way after purchasing my '99 SD. I wasted a bunch of time at the parts counter and multiple parts trips due to neither me nor the parts guy knowing about this duel use of the F250 nominclature in '99.

You are correct. In the OBS days, there was no F-450 or F-550, but there was an F-Superduty that was heavier duty than the F-350.

I found this online that goes through the History of the F-Series trucks...

According to this the "Super Duty" moniker has been used several times over the decades; 1958, 1988, & 1999-present
Nice History of the Ford F-series. Unlike Chevy and especially unlike Dodge, Ford has NEVER built an ugly truck!!!

You're forgetting about the 1940s COEs.

Correct. The LD 250 was pretty much a heavy duty 150, while the HD 250 was pretty much a light-end 350. The LD and HD 250s were COMPLETELY different trucks.

The 97-99 F250's had weird 7 lug hole wheels. The first F250 Superduty was produced in 1999, with more "normal" 8 lug wheels.
In 96, there was a LD F250 only available in 4x2. The HD F250 was the only one available in 4x4 and with the 7.3L engine. Here's a link to the 1996 F-Series Brochure.

OK, I should have clarified . . . I meant pickup truck.

Yes, all '97 F-series >8500GVWR were "Heavy Duty" and the same body style as '92-96. All '97 F-series <8500GVWR were the '97-04 body style, and F250s were labelled "Light Duty" with 7 lugs.

This is mine, and it has the same badge on the t/g.
