Last fall I found a 4x4 crewcab for cheap. The deal was that the engine ran, but had a "knock". We got it running enough to get it up onto a flatbed and I towed it to my sisters' place, and it started enough to get it off the deck, but seized shortly after that. Wouldn't move at all. Made a lot of nasty noises just before it died.

Today(4 months later) I was up there, so I decided to drain the oil etc. I pulled the plug, and about 3 gals of coolant came out the oil drain hole before any oil at all!!

It had a turbo on, and when I pulled the turbo last fall, it was all oily, and the intake had a huge puddle of oil in it.

So, obviously there's a lot of oil that was going into the intake(I'm talking LOTS)that can't be good. There's coolant in the oil, but no oil in the coolant. I thought of oil cooler, but since the oil is usually higher pressure, I thought I'd see oil in the coolant before coolant in the oil.

Now that I drained all that out of the oilpan, I can turn the engine over fine(with a bar) with no resistance(other than compression)

So, I'm thinking it just filled up the oilpan till it couldn't turn anymore(made one helluva racket)

I've assumed it's cavitated, but my question is, what's the chance that it just has a blown headgasket, and how to figure out which it is, other than pulling the heads. I can hear compression escaping(gurgling) into the rad when I bar it over.

I've kinda resigned m'self to pull the engine completely, but now, I'm thinking if it's just a headgasget, I might get away with just doing the heads...?

Thoughts?

Maybe all that coolant in the base caused an over fill in the base and that is where the oil came from. The noise could have been it hydrolocking, prolly bent a few rods when that happened.im thinking its gonna have to be pulled apart and checked out.

I'm glad you have a drop in motor for that truck, I don't thing that 7.3 IDI turbo is going to be very easy to fix. Probably needs sleeves, rings, bearings, maybe more, who knows, that coolant is some nasty crap. Good luck,
J.D.
