hey all, I am in the middle of installing an SB Clutch SMFW setup in my pickup and have a few questions in order to do the job correctly

- The rear main isnt leaking at all, should I just leave well enough alone and not fix it until it's broke or do it for insurance

- On the throwout bearing, where and how much grease do I put on the shaft....any special grease required?

- There is soe minor surface rust on the flywheel from sittin in the garage for a bit....will it damage anything to take a little ATF/ steel wool and get it off there?

I appreciate the help i know you guys will give me, I have done slutch jobs before but they were always on beaters and I didnt really care about the quality of the job....but I really dont want to mess this one up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

thanks

I would leave the main seal alone. I don't know how many miles are on your truck, but if it is not leaking I would leave it alone.
The throwout bearing usually has some grease in a groove on the inside. You just need enough to coat the slide, but not so much it comes off and gets into the clutch. I usually use a little moly based grease to make sure it will slide good. Also grease the pivot ball for the clutch fork. Your plan to get the rust off should be fine, just be sure you get the atf off.

If the truck has over a 100.000 miles on it I would replace the rear seal while the tranny is out, this is the time to get a new fresh seal in that will probably last the live of your new clutch.
Just my 2cents.

good luck, Hans.

I believe some brake cleaner will work well to get the rust off too. The guy helping me recommended trying not to get dirty fingerprints on everything, so we wiped it all down with brake clean before the install and then once it was bolted in. Don't know if it makes a difference or not, just a thought.
