I am thinking about replacing my stock exhaust, while I have my transmission out. Everything is more accessible, and it should lower temps. I currently only have the SCMT with 60HP and 80HP, but may buy something more potent.

I want the quietest performance exhaust I can get, especially at an idle, and in-cab. I am not an audiophile, I just want the truck to be a bit of sleeper, so if I am cruising the strip, or idling through the parking lot, it seems tame, but so that the truck wakes up when it needs to.

Should I go 4" or 5"? Is the 5" a tight fit, with stock height and spare tire?

Should I get the exhaust flow director (Honeycomb looking)? It makes sense to me, but is like $90 more bucks.

Finally why should I pay more for Stainless exhausts over the alumized ones which are less expensive?

4" is probably plenty big from the turbo back. Gives you room to grow so to speak. Stainless is a necessity up here in snow country where we wallow is a slurry of snow, ice, MgCl2 and NaCl all winter long. Unless you spend a lot of time at the ocean, I doubt you need more than aluminized.

It sounds like the aero turbine muffler keeps things quiet and hold downs the EGT too. Anybody used those?

I installed the 4" Stainless Steel Magnaflow about 3 weeks ago. It is fairly quiet and I like it very much. There is a drone at about 75mph but it is tolerable. I may look at sound proofing the cab a bit more. That drone may have been increased by the AFE Stage 2 I installed the following day...

I installed it myself and needed to cut the stock exhaust twice to get it out. Installing the downpipe by myself wasn't easy either. I got it close and then strapped a bungie cord around the bottom to hold it so I could line it up and clamp it up top. Then I snugged the upper clamp and checked my alignment.

Thanks for the input on the magnaflow, too bad about the 75MPH drone, that is my standard speed on the interstate.

Anyway I had hoped to order something today but spent a bunch of time searching old threads and didn't find much about quiet plus flow.

I was favoring an Aero muffler, but the feedback in one thread on them is pretty mixed. They do seem to reduce turbo noise.

Also there are sound bites for MBRP Here in an MBRP thread

The best thread I found so far, I can't seem to get back to, and it requires more work than simply ording a complete system was to have a 4" DownPipe to a 5" muffler to a 4" or 3.5" over the rear axle, to a larger tip.

The poster 6.0L? or something claims the different diameters don't allow for the exhaust pulses to form a full length harmonic wave inside the pipes which causes drone.

I have the dual outlet from MBRP, and I cant hear the exhaust unless the window is down & I am mashing the go pedal. I changed to a muffler delete to give a bit of bark when I hit the pedal.
I guess after traveling down the length of a crew cab 8ft bed to dual outlets leaves the exhaust too tired to be loud. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

redford1977,

I was experiencing loud drone with my truck and it was terrible. I went through several exhaust systems in the following order trying to quieten it.....

DynoMax 4" with 3.5" dwnpipe
DynoMax 4" with 4" dwnpipe
MBRP single 4" with 4" dwnpipe
MBRP duals 4" with 4" dwnpipe
MBRP single (again) with 4" dwnpipe

Tryed Aeroturbine, straightpiping, various mufflers with all the above configurations with no luck. Truck was loud with terrible drone around 17-1800 rpms

I recently put together something that is working and working great.
Put THIS part #UF10400 as close as I could to the dwnpipe just after the tranny crossmember and then went about 12 inches and put in a MBRP 4 Inch Aluminized Resonator Volume Reducer, 18"OAL x 6"OD x 4" Inlet/Outlet
Part #: MB-R2009. After the resonator volume reducer I have the MBRP muffler that came with the exhaust. All of the above are straight through with no restriction. My EGTs are the same as they always have been. So I have downpipe, flex pipe resonator, MBRP resonator volume reducer, MBRP muffler, tailpipe. The flex pipe above is actually very flexible and the mesh is SS on the outside (I think). Anyway it creates a seperation between the downpipe which is attached to the engine, and the rest of the exhaust system so that it cannot act like a tuning fork sticking out the back /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

My drone is about 90% gone and the exhaust can barely be heard at idle and highway speeds. In fact, standing at the exhaust tip with the truck running you can hear the engine noise more than the exhaust and that is standing right beside the tailpipe. It is one of the best things I have done to my truck in a while and the wife is very happy now riding at highway speeds /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I call it the [email protected] exhaust system /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif Hey it worked for me. I did not ever think my truck could be this quiet with no drone.

Remember depending on the configuration of the truck, i.e longbed, Supercab, type of turbo, etc some may act differently but I know mine was loud and the drone was awful but now it is nice in the cab....finally

ROFL.

Do you drive with the windows up and no music playing 24/7?

OP, I think you are worrying too much. Go for a ride in someones truck with a 4" exhaust, you will be surprised.

BTW, those sound clips are from the outside, they dont have any from the inside because there is no difference that you can hear.

I have summits 5" exhaust with the muffler installed. It is WORLDS quieter than my old straight piped stock system, windows down or up! The straight piped droned soooo bad to me, I began to hate it. My 5" exhaust has a mean low rumble when you get on it, but if you drive nice... its quiet enough to hear passengers in the back seat without yelling /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

let me put it this way, I have a 5month old and a 3yr old... my wife commented how quiet the truck is now. BUT if you roll the windows down or get ON it hard, it sounds meeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan without being retarded obnoxious like a straight piped truck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

I thought I was the only one making up bastard systems! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gifDid you notise any better initial power off idle to 1800 rpm's with the 3 1/2" downpipe instead of the 4"??My truck does not make boost till 2000 rpm & thought about trying a 3 1/2" down pipe to see if it would help it come on earlier.I would like to see some pics of your system. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

DART505,

I have in fact noticed the truck has better low end and spool up with the 3.5" dwnpipe vs. the 4" dwnpipe. I changed them out several times just to make sure and I do like it better with the 3.5" dwnpipe. I will try to get you some pics of the system /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif It does not look bad, I used the MBRB muffler delete pipes between them to make it look good and they are flared on both ends.

Houtex,

Yes I do have a radio in the truck but when you go on long trips with a wife and small child in the back and the drone is resonating througout the cab you cannot blast a radio to drowned out the exhaust because the wife and kid will not enjoy that. But then again you are a teenager so you do not have to worry about that I assume. When your young these things do not matter as much /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif When you get older and the wife is nagging because it gives her a headache, her nagging is worse than the drone and loud exhaust /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well that is why I was asking,I wanted to know if it helped.I wanted to try one.Where did you buy one from?Dockboy told me he still runs one on his,if that is true that blows the need for a 4" downpipe all to hell!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gifI think I will try one if I can find who has a deal on one then I will have 2 4" downpipes for sale. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
You helped me make up my mind to try it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

LOL at that. I am in a similar situation minus the nagging. I can never hear the kids when they talk to me with the stock exhaust. And my ears start to hurt after several hours of music loud enough to hear it well. I don't think I have a loud exhaust or drone with the stock setup, but diesels are loud. I already have to shut it off in the drive-thru.

My wife likes the upgrades and wants me to chip her Expedition too. But for me, it humiliates punks even more when I pass them in and they aren't sure how hard I got on it.

Dart, if I am not mistaken I think the H2E kit comes with a 3.5" downpipe....I think that is the one I still have. Have to do some checking to be sure but that would explain why Greg has one also since he has the h2e kit also. Maybe Duckboy will chime in and help us out a bit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

LOL James /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

3 1/2" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

The output size of the H2E exhaust housing is 3 1/2". Using the 3 1/2" down pipe, then increasing to 4" is better for the exhaust velocity then going directly to 4" at the exhaust housing output /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
