Hello all,
Well I had somewhat of a weird thing happen yesterday. We drove into town, to pick up some furniture, (about a 30 minute drive), stopped for a bite to eat, then drove to a department store. As I pulled into a parking place at the store the truck stalled. I told my wife, “Something’s not right”; when I tried to restart the truck it would turn over but wouldn’t start. Wwwwwrrrrrrr, the starter was steadily spinning the motor over, but the truck wouldn’t start. Well my wife went inside to make good use of her time, (shopping), while I scratched my head and tried to think. I’m a new diesel owner, and certainly don’t all the in’s and out’s of the Power Stroke diesels, the only thing I could think of to check was a clogged fuel filter. I had already planned to replace it so I knew where it was located, so I removed the fuel filter and then replaced the cover. The same result, the truck would turn over but wouldn’t start. With one small exception, I didn’t get the fuel filter cover down tight, so diesel goes spraying out from around the edges of the cover while I’m turning the engine over. Note to self: Make sure the fuel filter cover is tight when removing or replacing the fuel filter. Anyway, I re-installed the filter, (with the cap tight this time), and waited for the tow truck. The tow truck arrived about 30 minutes later, and I got in the truck to try to straighten out the front wheels, just for fun I figured I’d hit the ignition switch and WAHLAH! The truck fired right up. How aggravating, now I’m not sure whether to let the tow truck driver take it to the Ford Dealer or drive it home. So I figured I’d drive it home. It ran great the whole way even after shutting down and starting up 2 more times. Does anyone have any inputs on what could have caused the problem? Any suggestions? Any help is much appreciated. - Tom
(P.S. The temp here in So. Cal. was about 75 degrees, the truck was running in it's normal temp range, fuel was 3/4 tank.)

Buy a new CPS (camshaft Position Sensor) and replace it. It's a common failure part. After you replace it, mosey on over to the NHTSA website and fle a complaint about it. The NHTSA is currently doing an investigation into CPS failures and that will add to the list.

And do it quickly. Once the cam sensor starts acting up, it won't be long until it leaves you stranded. May take a month, may be tomorrow, but it will happen.

that is the way it is. Last time mine shot craps in town, I called the wife, she came by and we finished the errands.

Then we stopped by the piece of (oops ford) and it cranked right up. So I drove it home and put the cam position sensor in that I carry in the glove box.

that was no 5 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif

So, it sounds like this cam position sensor is a nasty little devil, I suppose I'll order one from the Ford store. How much does the little darling cost? Thanks for the advice guys. - Tom

Hey Tom,, WELCOME ABOARD TDS! You will find this sight very helpfull as you alread have I see. It does sound like the CPS. They can be very intermittant at times. Not a bad part to "Shotgun" for symptoms like that. NOT to make you worry but there are some other things too, but that is MOST Common. Sounds like your fuel pump is working well!! LOL Dont feel bad, your not the first to do that either! *If you ever have a fuel related stall,, it will shudder and shake and buck, like no ones business, cant hardly mistake a diesel running out of fuel. IT WILL not just shut down...
The fuel pump is fairly common to fail on these,, seems it happens in a rash on here though. Mine went out a couple years ago, along with about 10 others at a similar timeframe!
Enjoy your PSD! I know I do MINE!

What do you fly in the USAF? I am an avionics technition on the F-15C/D in St. Louis Mo. (Air National Guard) Currently in Israel for JS 06! Loveing my time here.
Again WELCOME TO TDS!

Jim - Thanks for the kind words, if the CPS dosen't do the trick I'll be sure to post another question on the board here. I'm an Airborne Communcations Operator currently at Edwards AFB CA. I'll have to drop you a line sometime and talk about your opinion of Whiteman AFB for an assignment. Thanks again - Tom
