hunting down a clunk,pulled rear diff plug fluid seemed ok and full,but metal on plug,(see pic)no sharp fragments felt like grease.

normal or should i look further,and pull rear cover?

Have you checked the driveline u-joints?

With that much gunk - I would change the fluid.

Hard for the magnet to do its job with that much gunk on it - so lots more stuff in the fluid....

I'll add that your clunk my very well be the slip yoke; needs packed on occasion.

greased the slip joint,inspected ujoints,replaced carrier bearing.before i posted this

Is the clunk happening when you put it in drive? Or is it a go down the road clunk? When you have the slip yoke out did you check for play in the splines? That be my guess if you had everything out and replaced / greased.
